So, is a step hull faster in say a 2-4ft chop than a straight V or not? I can see where it's true on glassy water where a straight won't aerate but in a chop they're all aerating?.....

T2x, I find your opinion that the marketing of steps is a bunch of crap, right in line with mine. Even if you did gain that 2-3 mph the hazards of the spin & hook potential is just not worth it. Also the average pain in the ass problems such as when you beach up it takes a bunch of throttle to back them puppy's off and there's forklift problems with chipping glass and on and on. All for maybe 2-3mph?????

I think it's wrong to say that all stepped vees are no good. There are non-stepped vees that are no good, and there are cats that are no good. There are even good cats WITH STEPS! (How can that be?) If the hull and steps are designed as a system, the results will be much better than if a manufacturer takes an existing hull and simply cuts grooves in it.
Is there marketing hype that goes with steps? You bet. There's also marketing hype that goes with interior vinyls, lay-up materials and even (Dare I say it?) engines and drives. Whether its worth the $$ and aggravation for 2-3 mph (it's usually more) is a personal choice. Think about the speed vs $$$$$$ when it comes to 575Sci's vs Hp500EFI's!!!!!! THAT is nuts.
