My 7 foot 1 inch sail was 84 pounds after props took a chunk out of him. I am guessing yours weighed 85 to 100 pounds. I also cuaght mine in 120 feet of water, then he ran out to 600 feet. Took me an hour and a half to reel him in on 18 pound test.

You are lucky to have caught such a nice sized fish!
sorry to burst your bubble... i know haw fish tales are

I cought this a couple of weeks ago off Stuart, about 8 miles offshore in 140' of water. It was a bit on the small side but he sure was lively. It didn't take long to get him in on a Penn 30VSW with 20lb mono. We grilled up a bunch of Mahi the same evening.
I keep my 50 Bertram in Stuart diring the winter. It's only 6 or 7 miles out to the stream!!! We have been seeing dozens of sails free jumping lately. I can't wait to fly back down in a couple of weeks.

Nice DJD, I will be back down to FTL in a couple of weeks also. Hope to hook the wife on a sail.

Sorry dreamer, not sure what records you are looking at. I am an IGFA member and have the record book right here.....biggest Atlantic sail is 135 pounds off Nigeria by Ron King. Chris Martin caught a 105 pound sail off Key West on 8lb test in 1993. The biggest Pacific sailfish was 210 lbs on 50 lb test in 1990.

My guess is that Becca's fish was longer than she is! I am 6'3" and here is my 84 + pound, 7 foot one inch fish caught off Miami, the morning after the OSO/FPC/Cig boat show parties a couple of years ago........

Would have released it, but the fish decided to charge the props and cut off the line....that worked, but he also lost a big chunk of his side. Fish was collected floating dead at the GPS co-ordinates by another boat. You can see me holding his fin together where the prop chopped it, the other side of the fish was messed up by the props.

Our guy Ryan tried to snag the fish by diving in fully clothed with a boat hook, and when he was gone from sight underwater in the bloody water, I thought he was dead too!!

Ted,
This weeks fishing report!!!
Thanks
Jim

GUATEMALA RED RED RED HOT - BEST DAY EVER

This fishing report for the week ending 03-11-06 is
prepared by The Great Sailfishing Company which
operates out of the new Pez Vela Marina,Guatemala. The
fishing grounds for the past week ranged between 18 to
30 miles with calm days and fairly flat seas with late
afternoon winds causing some chop. This week saw most
boats releasing sails in the mid twenties into the
high double digits WITH ONE BOAT REPORTING OVER
100.Today it looks like another world record for most
sails on conventional was set. This week saw the
fishing going from hot to todays red hot / sizzling.
We at the Great Sailfishing Company hosted several
parties / day charters including the Harry party that
released 39 sails on Wednesday and 49 on Friday. Today
the McFadden party released 59 on conventional and
another 6 on the fly.All of our parties enjoy the
comforts of The Joint Venture 35ft.Bertram with hot
morning coffee and hot lunches, fresh fruit, snacks and
real cold beer. Also the first part of this week saw
Marlins in the spread on three different days with 3
hook-ups releasing one 300lb and one 400lb Blue Marlin
great job Mr.Herdon.For more info. contact us at
[email protected] or visit our website at www.greatsailfishing.com
Hey Dreamer

My old capt. called my last week he fished for a total of 15 days & released 234 sail fish there. He is on his way back to miami this week to have some boat work done the fishing is great there.

I would stay around FL there are a lot of big sails there

I guess we both should know better

Tight line on your trip
