You can all thank me for bringing Adam to the board as I have been talking with his dad and telling him what a great site this is and how his name, Ross, and his boats have been a topic for some time now.
Anyway, I was really impressed with Ross and his candor and cooperation. Let's all try to coax the Old Man of the Sea (Ocean) onto the board for some input like T2x. Ross told me he is computer shy. Come on Ross, get on the board. This is a new millenium. |
Sounds good Adam, look forward to hearing from you
:) :) |
Vonwolske, good luck on getting my dad online, I've tried to no avail. I think that he'd have alot of fun talking to different people, I just wonder if the forum is ready for him...
46tomcat, look forward to seeing you there, I'd love to get a ride. Boot- Good luck trying to get ahold of kenny, he's without a doubt one of the best guys in the business today when it comes to anything on boats, especially the 39', but he hardly ever answers his phone. If you need anything give us a call, we'll be glad to help out in anyway that we can. ;) |
Anyone know the weight of a 1983 39 express?
|
Tizbad, weights (hull and deck only)were around 6000lbs, so with big blocks, arnesons, interior, etc, etc and a partridge in a pear tree she should weigh around 10000 maybe 11000, they do gain weight (and lose it as they dry out)periodically.
Adam |
11000 lbs? Is that a cat or a dog? Oh, hi Greg. I saw my first 39 express today. That thing is MONSTER! Good luck docking that thing at 4:00 in the morning. I can see it now. transom scraped up, and a sign next to it saying "the captain was here" :D
|
WOOO HOOOO . . .7 PAGES, ALRIGHT MADCOW!!! . . .ITS OK IF TIZ SCRAPES UP THE TRANSOM.MY SHOP RATE DOUBLES FOR REPEAT REPAIRS.AN IM IN THE MARKET FOR A NEW BOAT (SOMBODY HAS TO PAY FOR IT, I MEAN BESIDES ME)
:D :D :D   :D [ 12-23-2001: Message edited by: glassdave ] |
can't believe you guys got this up to 7 pages. I think someone has way too much time on there hands.
|
O.K. thats it now its setteled...............im using vinyl graphics. I dont want to buy a boat for u dave , vinyl is cheaper to replace, 10 year guarantee, quick repair..............I bet I could even repair it before anyone woke up...ya thats it. Thanks madcow for the
imput   ;) :D And leave the captain out of this hes a good friend. |
The older 39's were built strong and to last, that's why theres still a 39' cat from 19 years ago still around! The other "lighter" cats that are out there can't make that boast. Our new 38'(10'6" beam) with big blocks, and either bravo's or arnesons full cabin, dry weigh in at about 8000lbs. We know how to build them even lighter (you take all the materials that you would normally use, and make sure half of them are still in the pile when your done)but out laminate schedule has been proven for over two decades now, and were not about to sacrifice any broken (spelled lawsuit!) boats over a few mph.
;) ;) |
teel ya what adam.i crawled up in the sponsons of tizbads 39, an i was impressed.you guys have unbelievable attention to detail when it comes to construction.that thing is BUILT like a brick you know what house.the glass work on the stringers, bulkheads and deck/hull seam was impresive .safe to say this boat will be around for a long time.if you took all the stress cracks and measured them end to end on the entire boat you would have about about a foot and a half, lets see you do that with any other twenty year old boat.looking forward to comeing up to the shop again.maybe in january
|
Tell you what Adam, I came up to your factory with Phatkat to get balsa and resin to repair our 39 and was quite impressed with the work also(besides the fact that I love the smell of curing resin)It can't be easy getting just the right thickness of glass to be light enough for speed and strong enough for structural strength. I love our 39. People come out of the woodwork and beg for a ride. We've never had a boat before that gets that much attention.Love those Cats!
|
Oops sorry Phatkat I forgot to login! ;)
|
Well I cant make it lighter sooooo......bigger power= more speed = back on schedule. Lets see christmas present to myself intercoolers. :D
|

so adam, whats a good coating for the interior of the cats, (inside the cabin and under the rear seat)..to cover over the resin and to smooth out the fiberglass and make it easy to clean....
|
Sylvester, thanks, and hope you had a good holiday
Slick Nick, if you really want it smooth then you can do one of two things, the first method (the one that I prefer, but its not always possible to do) is to scuff the area good with a grinder (36grit)(an angle die grinder w/ roloc 3" pads works good) and then to apply a light layer of matting and then go over it while still wet with a light veiling of cheesecloth (looks like woven roving only extremely fine, about 3 or 4 oz cloth) no need for overlaps, just apply, wait for it to kick and then gelcoat or paint right over it (paint will get rid of the resiny smell better than gel, and won't ever get sticky) The second (and easier) method is to simply scuff the area, and then slick it with mud (bondo, putty, filler, etc) then use a DA and 80 or 150 grit, then paint over the top. I guess you could also just gel it multiple times, sanding in between each coat, but I prefer the first two ways over that. Well, hope that I helped, gotta go, my fingers are tired of typing. Check back soon. ;) |
THANKS ADAM, MY BUDDYS THOUGHT I WAS CRAZY, BUT YOU SAID THE SAME THING WE WERE TALKING ABOUT...WITH LAYING UP A LIGHT GLASS OVER TOP TO SMOOTH IT OUT...I TRY AND GET SOME PICS POSTED OF THIS PROJECT.
|
Nick, If you use dura-tec clear mixed with your gel you will get a smooth non tacky finish,if you dont it will always stay slightly tacky and if you use a wax additive it will stay dull and will be hard to clean. Spark. ;)
|
Nick, duratec (you really like that duraclear dont ya spark...)also makes a product called base primer (707-051) which is basically sprayable bondo, if you brush, roll, or spray a heavy coat of that, you can sand it down and paint over it, but for aggressive, deep weaves like heavier knytex, or johnston composites, or especially woven roving, I would go with the light veiling, although it will add a small amount of weight, it will give the best results.
Hey spark, any luck on selling your boat? Hey 46tomcat, I heard a rumor the other day that shortly after your 46 was delivered, you had severe delaminations on the deck? Any truth to that, or was it merely the dreaded "skaterhater" gossip? |
hey guys thanks for the hints,HEY SPARK, what happened to bobs motors...i spent a load of money on them, they where troy dennis motors with a rebuild on them with dyno time only when i sold bob the boat!!!!
|
adam, just the rumer mill had no problems boat is perfect.
