DJD 12-29-2001 10:29 PM

Does anyone know of a cat, I think it is a 39 or so Ocean Express that is red/white with some blue in it & it used to be named "Super Fine"? I was on Long Island Sound when we saw this cat ripping back & forth. Next thing I knew, the boat was stopped and obviously taking on water.
The local water cops arrived after I called them and I got the passangers onto my boat. They started asking the owner for his registration as he was knee deep in the cockpit and the water crept over the transom. I took the boat in tow only to have the water cops cut my lines because I was interferring.
The Cat ended up 75% under before they figured out they should tow it.
The boat ended up beached in Greenwich harbor for a week or two & then was taken away.
Just wondering what ever happend to it???

ViciousOne 12-31-2001 07:21 PM

Adam , I have a guy on the hook on it right now that I met racing it last summer. But know cash yet, So you know how that goes!!! But I have started hull number two for the new deck which I hope to be racing in next season!!Yea know what it comes down too though the MONEY!!!!! OH YEA Nick, the number three and four rod's came out off the port motor, He got that fixed went out and lost starboard motor to oil pressure, now pulled both motors, Raised the compression and pulled off the blowers he's putting on 830 cfm holly's to make it more user friendly and try agian next season he had to hard of a time trying to dock it and keeping it running the same. {BOB SHOULD NOT HAVE A PERFORMANCE BOAT.....} LATER SPARK.

tomcat 01-10-2002 04:03 PM

When my 30 Excalibur Cat grows up it wants to be a 39 Express Cat. Beautiful boats. There is one docked at a marina about a mile from my house. It's been painted white, no graphics, with new white rubrails. 540s and Speedys. Every time I'm at that marina I hope to run into the owner and get a ride. How much power to run 100 mph in these boats?

tizbad4 01-10-2002 05:54 PM

Talking to Ross at Express he says approx. 700 hp. Yet to find out havent got mine wet yet. :)

boot 01-10-2002 06:58 PM

Yeah I would say between 700-800hp.

boot 01-10-2002 07:00 PM

8 ?????? I can't beleive it ! You guys need to find something else to do with your time ! :p

ViciousOne 01-10-2002 07:12 PM

It takes a pair of 850's to make a 48' go 100 mph.

glassdave 01-10-2002 07:21 PM

:D :D :D eight pages :p :p :D woo . .hooo :D  yea!!!!!!!!!were gett'n our money's worth out of this post.

Madcow 01-10-2002 07:25 PM

8 PAGES!?!? I don't think O E makes 8 boats a year! GET A LIFE!

Madcow 01-10-2002 07:28 PM

To answer the question of how many horses to make a 39' go 100, you have to be specific about which era of 39' your talking about. The early models were a little heavy, then got progressively lighter. Early model 39's close to 1000 horse per side, middle run 39's - 800-850, later ones about the same. I'd like to do one with the new laminate schedule w/ twin 1000's and watch it hit the 130+ mark. BUT, since we have the new 38' (with twin 750 horse 540's) running at over 120 (and still not dialed in on props yet!)Why go back in time??? Dated looks (not bad, just dated) and dated design.
The new 49' will run 100mph with a 5 year powertrain warranty, shiftable two speed trans, and bulletproof drive system, all with diesel engines...(SPELLED $1.10 per gallon, not $3.00 per gallon!) We should have the first one in the water at smoke on the water 02'
Good meeting glassdave and tizbad (i saw that dash!!!! don't worry, we'll put it on the bill!)
Later

Hey Adam , THat sounds like a good place to run a diesel powered boat ,"SMOKE" on the water !! :D

Just kiddin !

SlickNick 01-10-2002 08:02 PM

hey adam, what is a 1988 39' considered?, and how heavy is it?

suncat 01-11-2002 08:01 AM

Hey boot, believe me when I say that my brother and I have gone around with my dad on putting the first 49' out their with diesels in it. He had a point though, because at the last SotW, Sorcerer hurt both engines, We popped an engine on our dealer demo entry, and several other hi-end, big power boats were sidelined (cat can do blew up a #6!! OUCH!)So if you took about 10 years worth of poker running with the 49' with diesels, you MIGHT spend about what any one of the those guys (or us) spent for just that weekend. And who can put a price on the satisfaction of knowing you entering, ran with the head of the pack and finished every poker run you wanted to run?
Hey slick, I'm going to say that was when we first changed our laminate schedule (lightened it a bit) and started playing around with pre-treated balsa cores and started using some vinylester resins, so theres a good chance that your boat is right about where it needs to be.(As long as it never got super wet and was never given a chance to dry out properly, they only get heavier, not lighter!)
Later,
A

SlickNick 01-11-2002 11:03 AM

ADAM THE BOAT IS BALSA CORED, SO IAM SAFE IN SAYING THAT THE BOAT IS AROUND 10K LBS?

suncat 01-11-2002 12:48 PM

Nick, yeah, you could be safe in assuming that weight. Whats interesting is when we were building both the 39's and 48's around the same timeframe, that they would weigh within about 500lbs of one another when rigged similarily. I guess what you lost in length on the 39' you picked up in width.
Check out www.H20performance.com I posted an ad with our new canopy 38' on it under boats for sale Express Cats.
later
A ;)

YOur link won't work Adam ,TAke the comma off the end of it .

I got to the site but it didn't bring up pictures , :(

Adam ,I think the diesel idea is great if you can find enough power and still be light enough. What type and size diesels are you doing ?

Nagivator 01-11-2002 08:05 PM

Hey Dave the thread is still going strong. Lucky for you there is no Ocean Express link in the boat section.... ;) I don't care how old our boat is or how fast it isn't,we've worked long and hard to get it and I like it(can you tell I'm a female  )

jbusseym3 01-11-2002 08:19 PM

Adam. Do you still build the 25 cat. I saw 25 on you web-site, and how much to the run. I will be in the market for a cat 25 or smaller after i sell the magnum

suncat 01-11-2002 09:11 PM

Boot, were going to run yanmar 500hp/1000ftlbs torque diesels w/ an overdrive, two speed ZF trans into our new fixed shaft drive
system.
Hey Magnum, yes, we still do the 25's on a per order basis. Email me and I'll send you any info that you need. Thanks all

tizbad4 01-12-2002 12:57 AM

I think with 297 post we should have ower own
Ocean Express forum in the boat section :p :) :D
