Call me an idiot!
Last yr I installed a fool proof way to run the motors on the hose w/o screwing around with muffs. You know the system, a tee in the supply hose hooked to a garden hose adapter located by each motor. VERY SIMPLE, even a beginner can operate it and not burn up an impellor. With twin motors, you have 2 of these hose adapters. So I hook it up to the one I want to run, turn on the hose, verify water coming out the drive, then start the motor. 30 sec later the wife says it's still coming out the drive. WHAT?
Had a 50/50 chance of starting the correct motor. I failed. :D |

"Here's your sign" :)

Re: Call me an idiot!
Regrettable, but not the worst thing one can do to his engine. I'm sure you're not the first to do this. Only thing left is to fix it and move on. You'll probably never make THAT mistake again.
Generators have a sensor that shuts off the ignition if there is no water flow. Mercruiser should consider this technology. |
Re: Call me an idiot!
Idiot! :p
I've done that. |

On our rig the plate says "port" and "starboard" where you plug the hose but I bet that one day I'll miss it anyway.... so welcome to the idiot crowd... :D

Re: Call me an idiot!

|
Re: Call me an idiot!
No, can't do it, I'll give you a free pass on that one, done worse myself :drink:
Broke two 6' $100 dollar vhf antennas on different occasions backing the boat into my shop, second time it hit the door just right and took the overhead door off it's tracks :( |
Re: Call me an idiot!
probably not as stupid/dangerous as me putting one of my batteries in backwards last year- yup -even forced the cable end over the wrong size post;
lot of smoke an melted wire  |
Re: Call me an idiot!
Nor as dumb as me changing an AC outlet with the power on right next to the furnance that makes really, really, good ground. Ouch!

Re: Call me an idiot!
Here's another dumb one for ya. Last year my buddies boat was on the trailer and he had it up by the hitch with the fork lift. He was lowering it down on a block with me guiding him down, when i saw some rocks on the block and tried to swipe them off. Yep, lowered the bost right down on my fingers. I quickly told him to raise it back up, but the damage was done....crush, smashed fingers and a few lost fingernails on that one.......Now thats not being and idiot, thats right up to jackass......

Re: Call me an idiot!
I learned not to let the girlfriend or my buddys have control over the lever that says port or starboard .Mine Hustler has a lever that selects which motor you want to flush.
Thats 2 impeller kits :( I dont let them help anymore  Rob |
Re: Call me an idiot!
we all make mistakes, you have 50/50 there so you chose the wrong side , that not make and idiot, just a simple mistake that can be solve with money, and if you can solve some problem with money is not a big deal, idiot will be someone that get in a boat drink and hurt someone, raul

The problem was, I hooked the hose to the motor on my left, then I proceded to turn around, to the dash and start the motor on the left. Left is left, right? :drink: Just knew the was a reason for having an extra impellor kit around. Kinda thought I would need it while on the lake, not in my garage. |
Re: Call me an idiot!
Hey Jerry,
Just don't forget your DRAIN PLUG once you get to the lake. Never known that to happen to anyone? Bob |

Re: Call me an idiot!
Well, if it's any consolation to you, I'll say that you are part of a very large group of extremely fine individual of which I, myself, could run for the CEO. I'll only say that making a mystake once could be called "gaining experience" but if doing it twice then call it "being an idiot" and that's all I'm gonna say about that.

Re: Call me an idiot!
How about forgetting to turn the valve back so you can suck water up through the drive....the next week you go boating and idle out of the marina and see you are over heating! Yep I've done that before! :D
|
Re: Call me an idiot!
I am idiot proof I have one motor  :D oh but I BURNT ONE OUT AT THE RACK, when the driver parked the fork truck on the hose and then yells hey there's no more water coming out of your tailpipes   . art
