New Formula FasTech pricing - WTF!?!?

So, having owned two of these I look at them every year to see what's new and all that. Just for chits and giggles I looked up a new 271 with a 525 and all the bells and whistles - less a trailer - and it rang the register at $190,710!!!!! That is for a 25' (real length) production-built boat!  Am I nuts or does that seem just flat-out crazy!?!?

Thats ridiculous. A new 27ZR starts at 95K with a 525.

Wow. That's some pretty proud pricing.

Re: New Formula FasTech pricing - WTF!?!?

Don't let MSRP give you sticker shock. Price the boat thru your local dealer and it will give you a better perspective. Nobody pays close to list price anymore unless it is a small builder that sells direct, then the list price may be a lot lower but it may be the actual selling price. And dealer discounts from MSRP vary greatly between manufacturers.Don't sweat the MSRP on the websites. Figure out what you want and get a real money quote.Only then will the price mean anything. :p

Re: New Formula FasTech pricing - WTF!?!?

Maybe Formula is going to the greeting card method of pricing, 50% off retail every day, you get the $5 card for $2.50 and leave thinking what a deal you got.

Re: New Formula FasTech pricing - WTF!?!?

a few years ago I was pricing a Donzi 33 ZX - already talked to a local dealer - could do it for 140-150ish.
Went to a boat show - sales sticker said 260,000 - I asked Joe sales guy, let's get real on this thing - what ya selling for??
He say's " that's it right there".
I was only 28 - so, the sales guy figured it was a joke. At the time I could handle 130, and I was seriously looking, and I knew what I wanted.

So the real price is over 100,000 less than MSRP on this boat??

It's all so confusing - my head hurts now...

FeverMike 07-25-2006 07:27 PM

Re: New Formula FasTech pricing - WTF!?!?

If you get around 20% off list/sticker then you are in the ballpark normally on these type of boats. But still that boat would be around $150k...way over priced for a Formula or any 24-29' boat.

I saw a Formula 2007 271 with a single 496HO with a dealer price tag of $106,000 last weekend at the Hydro races.

I can get a 35' fasTech Sport with T-496 HO's for 170K.

The 35' had the 3 tone paint option..head...sound system...the 27' lightly loaded.

But yea...you can double the price of a Porsche' Carrera as well if you put all the options on it....same with these boats...

Plus trailer...taxes etc..

24-27% off at the dealer in Northern Michigan..he will ship anywhere..he is the lowest priced anywhere...169K for a 35' FasTech lightly loaded...no trailer...plus tax..that's a good deal in my books.

Re: New Formula FasTech pricing - WTF!?!?

It's because of the cost to build them now with the OIL being so out of control. I was talking to Terry Sobo at Nortech about building a new boat and he said same boat from 2005 to 2006 50K more in build cost 70k more from 05 to 07.

Sales tax is tax deductable. Plus if you are buying a 1/2 million dollar boat you better have WAY more than the 40k for the sales tax in the bank.

$1,180 for a VHF adio and antenna..that better include GPS, a hand held is $100 and a very good hard mount is $350. Now lets say you do drop the coin for this, in 2 years it will be worth 2/3rds of that and after 5 1/2 of that...just like buying Yahoo stock  :D

I think that Skater price is a joke, he must have thought the shift "2" key was the dollar sign, $52,000 sounds more like it, plus it is not as pretty as the 30 or 36 and up IMO, I do not like the lines at all, I know Skater is a top of the line mfg and I would love to own one but this 24 looks like a bayliner from the side. :D Let the beatings begin.  :D :D

I sill can't understand why it's so expensive to build a boat. The prices of new boats today are absolutely out of control. Let's look at the some of the builders out there....OL, Cigarette, Nor-Tech....these guys are making BANK!!!

I still can't figure out how a boat costs $500K and can be built in 8 weeks when a $500K home has 50X the material and 50X the man hours to build and takes 6+ months to build????? There is something seriously wrong with this

I can't afford a new boat with a pricetag of $250K, nor would I ever want to spend that much on such a depreciating asset. If I was wealthy, I guess that would change :D

simple, it's demand.... people are willing to pay for it.

You are corrct, but for the majority of the people out there (including me) probably 95%+ of us can't afford to pay those rediculous new boat prices

Plus it's faster, smoother, safer, bigger, way more custom and better looking than the little 271 Formula!

DoTheMath 07-25-2006 11:01 PM

Re: New Formula FasTech pricing - WTF!?!?

After the really bad experience I had with my 2000 271, (and Formula) I am all done with them, and that was my second Formula at the time. I have to agree, that is one proud price for that - or any - boat in that size range. I know you can get a 271 w/ a 496HO for a little over a $100k but that boat is a dog with 425hp, so a 525 is the only way to go to make it run. I'm not looking to beat up on Formula or you guys that buy them - but chit - that is insane!!! And yeah, they are all getting expensive - $850k for a 39 Top Gun with big power, $989k for a 42' OL w/ 850's... $250k for a 24' Skater - and it's all white too!!! ;) Makes NorTech's almost look like a bargain, they are a hell of a value anyway - relatively speaking. But at the end of the day, you can't take it with you so... might as well spend it on boats!!!! :p

Not to brag and considering the company I'm in for the most part not really that big of a brag! I deal with people that have high net worths and considering in my business 5 out of 6 ventures fail, around 84% of those who invest in penny stocks on the VSE (not much better since its become TSX) lose their money. My entire life I've watched people make and then lose millions of dollars! It's one thing to have money, with money and net worth you are rich my friend! :drink:

Re: New Formula FasTech pricing - WTF!?!?

If building a boat was so easy, then why are so many of the companies having hard times? I think it is a lot more expensive to build these boats than everyone thinks. I do not think these prices are high because of demand, but because it costs a lot to build - and it seems that it takes more than 8 weeks, more like 6 months to a year.

Quite frankly, it's no where near what the price indicates. I spent 5 years working at a composites manufacturer who specializes in aerospace composite primary structural design and manufacture. I know material costs, labor costs, and tooling and equipment costs in this field fairly well...I've designed and managed the construction of many high-tech sophisticated structural components, and it still baffles me why boats cost as much as they do....it's all about flash, and "because I can."
