Have a pair of Suzuki 130s on a Seacat of my buddies, have 800 hours on them now have not missed a beat. they also offerd a killer extended warrranty for about nothing.
Dads got a Yamaha 225 with i think 1400 hours ,nothing but basic maintanance.
I used to be anti-jap stuff but if i am a hundred miles offshore i feel a lot better with a Jap built motor on the back.

We have had good luck with the new E Techs. The performance and reliability is fantastic. We try and steer people away from 4 strokes unless they really have their heart set on them.

Merc and Yamaha cut ties a few years ago so I doubt Merc is using Yamaha's powerheads today. Besides the Merc 90 is bigger displacement. E-tec is not a 4 stroke but seems to be a pretty good engine. I would go with the Yamaha 4 stroke if I were to repower my fishing boat. i've been a Merc guy all my life and really like the Verado's, but the Yam's seem to be the best out there today.
