Yup, every state is different.
Dyno and I went to Hamilton Ontario from Holland MI a few years ago to trailer home a 1980 Sea Ray 310 Vanguard Express (12 ft. beam) that I had just purchased. A friend of Dyno's leased me his Chevrolet diesel dually and friend of mine leased me his 18000 lb. wide-load trailer. I got all the US and Canadian round-trip permits from a permit service , and had all the wide load flags and signage. I even called the police in Hamilton for permission to transport on their municpal roads and they were more than happy to assist us, including offering an escort if we felt it would be necessary. We made the trip with absolutely no problems, not even at the border during both crossings.
I learned a long time ago, when I drove semi for a living, to always run legal, no matter how much it costs.

My Brother was ticketed for failure to display a front license plate while driving my Excursion. Since he's a non-resident and is not required to get a Washington drivers license to drive, he got out of the ticket. Simular exceptions exist for being over-weight.......
