it was the 1-2" inches of ice and sleet that came first that weighed more than the 10-12 inches of snow after it...

Heck yeah! Depends on how much moisture content there is.

We live near the cost so most of our snow is wet and heavy! Good think we're not gettin any of that out here!

This sucks though! :(

most docks are like those, just sunk until the snow melts...

Damn, that's nuts.

Is that kind of snow normal for LOTO? I don't know much about the weather there.

Steve_H 12-01-2006 02:46 PM

Re: Loto snow damage.

i think the last time loto got that much snow was back in 94'. same kind of damage then. i put a call into my condo but havent heard back yet.

Re: Loto snow damage.

Not sure how the insurance thing will turn out, when we had a heavy snow and the local docks collapsed the marina insurance only covered the docks and your boat insurance is the only thing covering the boats (read the fine print in the dock agreement). I believe some of the marina's helped with the deductable out of good faith. Look at your policy very close to see if act of nature is covered, sometimes they don't carry a deductable on this type of claim. My stepdad is my ins. agent, there are so many fine details in a policy it will make you sick!!! Just trying to help Rob.

Re: Loto snow damage.

Just talked to my neighbor..hasn't been out in 2 days. a lot of community docks are just like that. In our old cove most faired OK although sitting low. Prey for sun and no wind for a while or it might not be over.

Haven't heard from our condo project yet but my boats at CPR hopefully the're still standing!

Re: Loto snow damage.

this falls under an act of god, and would be covered under your boat policy, I've talked to several friends who have big time damage to both docks and boat damage, this was the worst ice storm in 30 years , a fluke, will be alot of insurance work down there,

CigBoat 12-01-2006 02:58 PM

Re: Loto snow damage.

Similar thing happened on Cumberland about 12 years ago marina's insurance only covered repair to the docks. It is the boat's insurance to repair the boat. There were some expensive boats that sat at the fiberglass guys for a long time fighting about it.

Re: Loto snow damage.

The Moorings are filled with some of the most expensive cruisers on the lake, Tons of 40-54' cruisers, A girlfriend had a new 46 Sea Ray that is severly damaged. she just bought it this year, she is a nervous mess.

Each one will probaly say its the other ones resposibility or that your not covered by freak acts of nature or you didnt do all in your power to protect your property etc. etc. etc. A real shame to see everybodys pride and joy messed up like that.

FWIW-spoke with the agent at our Condo complex over at Millstone and she said they are sitting low but have not fallen. Said tomorrows forecast is for sun and low 40's. Snow actually holds more weight when things heat up, i hope they hold. I wish everyone luck, myself included...........

Re: Loto snow damage.

Damage to the boat is the responsibility of the boat owner. This is an act of God. Only chance to have the marina or dock builder cover the damage is if it can be proven that the docks were poorly engineered and/or constructed. Have been taking boat claims all day from LOTO and the damage is all over the lake area. Good luck to those with docks still standing.

Re: Loto snow damage.

The amount of loss there is unreal. Just between the Moorings and Port Arrowhead, you talking tens of millions of $. That is just two of many. Almost all large docks have damage and an unimaginable number of personal docks. Some of the pictures are sickening.

Re: Loto snow damage.

We went thru the same thing in '04 New Yrs day. The East/West docks got wiped out. 3 ft of snow on the South side of the roof, not a speck on the North side. Several boats went under. All boat claims were the owners responsibilites. The marina raised the boats and charged each owner $10k+ for their couple hrs of labor. Some of the docks that had no boats under them sunk to the roof, then raised back up as the snow melted with hardly any damage. The year round ones shown in the pics, obviously totaled. Now have brand new docks with an increase in slip fees of $1000 across the board. So marina gets all new docks and raised the slip fees. I think they were jumping up and down with joy.

Have tons of more pics, it is a sad sight.

I remember many freezing rain/sleet storms with multiple inches of snow afterwards. Extremely heavy. I don't miss Wisconsin, but have to deal with other unfortunate weather conditions living in the south. I feel bad for you all, hope it all works out. :( Jeff

Re: Loto snow damage.

so far 23 of the biggest marinas including port arrowhead, marine maxx, searay heaven has sustained serious damage or were totally destroyed, there are thousands of private docks with damage and water patrol reported thousands of boats being in the water or submerged, all of these boats will have to be rewinterized, what a nightmare. port arrowhead has over 200 huge searays, only 1 dock remains, and they just got in a new 60' searay which was severly damaged, we are talking probably in the hundred s .of millions of damage . this will definately affect some insurance companies big time.heading down tomorrow will report back.
