Good question.

32 V with 500 EFIs 88mph.

37 V with 500 EFIs 81mph.

Not potatoe chips. Just good ol' fashion offshore boats.

The Dominator hull is not a full step, it only runs through the 1st strake (maybe 15-18 inches). The SS hull was a true twin step hull. The Dominator hull is also a padded hull which will give you a faster ride.

Just as Carrol Shelby used to say, " Aerodynamics is just a poor excuse for not enough horse-power."... :D Then he went to LeMans and found out the Cobras wouldn't go past 150 until they built a coupe and streamlined it.

39 Velocity with 500 EFI's 87mph
39 Velocity with 496 HO's 80 mph
39 Velocity with 700's 114+ mph

Solid offshore boats

With equal power, length & weight, nothing is going to be faster than the Velocity. That pad bottom ain't for amateurs though.

I still don't know what a padded Fountain bottom looks like?
My 42 non step goes down to a V from bow to stern.
Explain what I can't find.
Thanks,
Mark

I have to say Velocity.

I'm biased though :D

Also, probably one of the most fun boats to drive.

Velocity's are pad bottoms and they do get lite. I believe you were comparing them to the Active Thunders that are true 24 degree deep V's and that was the question that was asked. As said earlier enough H.P. will make anything fast

ziemer 12-12-2006 08:39 AM

Re: Fastest Non Step V-Hull

From the Velocity website:

"In 1981, two very significant events in Steve’s life occurred and the history of offshore boating was changed forever. In that year, Steve and Gene were the first men to break the 100 mph barrier in a V-bottom boat at the annual kilo trials with a 30-foot Velocity."

With all things equal, hp, weight, etc. the pad-V bottom will always be faster than a straigt V.

In the rear of your boat at the centerline(keel) there is a 12-14 inch wide "pushdown area" kinda lika a strake but wider. Often this "pad" isn't a 24 degree angle - it's less. In theory, a flat bottom would be the fastestest- but the ride would be rough. The traditional "offshore" bottom angle (in the rear view -measured from a horiziontal flat) is 24 degrees. Sonic and Sutphen are sharper at 25 or 26 degrees. I think Fountains are 22 degrees - but the pad would be less - let's say 15 degrees from horizontal. Some boats have a small 0 degree flat that terminates at about 25 percent of the hull length. In the top view these look like a triangle , with the point "pointing" to the bow, and thus the name "delta pad". For example the 24 Baja has this delta pad that is totally horizontal in the rear view.

Most "pads" blend in with the rest of the bottom as they approach the bow, and are not visable from a front view.

Re: Fastest Non Step V-Hull

And I'm GUESSING that the Velocity or Older Non Step Fountains would be the "fastest" non step hull - because they are padded.

And....fastest means straight line and relatively calm water.

I'd really like to take a Sutphen for a ride as I therize it would be a nice riding and handling hull- same for the sonic's - because of the sharper v and relatively long "flat" on the sutphen.

But I'm only therozing.

WE FOR SURE COULD OF GONE WFO WITHOUT THEM. NO BANGING EVERYONE WAS STANDING EXCEPT FOR ME WITH MY BAD KNEES I SAT AND I HAVE A BAD BACK TO IT WAS LIKE RUNNING A CLASS 2 PRO TRUCK WITH 800HPS :D AND THE 35 WITH CUSTOM 725S RUN OVER A 100,THESE BOATS YOU CAN RUN WITH A FINGER TIP NOT LIKE A VILOCITY  BOTH HANDS ON THE WHEEL :p

My uncle has a 1990 30' Velocity and it is a good bang for the buck as far as power needed to run fast, But you do need to know how to drive our you'll get hurt very quickly.

Re: Fastest Non Step V-Hull

How much difference in speed does it make if the engines are staggered or side by side?

ziemer 12-12-2006 12:19 PM

Re: Fastest Non Step V-Hull

One thing that also helps the Velocity's for add'l speed is the built-in setback into the transom. This helps to raise the X dimension of the drive because the water has a chance to rise back up once it leaves the pad area. This was what Steve coined the "Stepp" transom. (I.e. the pad ends before the transom or the very rear of the boat.) I believe the Fountains were built this way too.

I think what Paul is asking is, what's the record for a straight bottomed V. Not which hull is faster. What is the fastest a straight V has run?

(Hint: He want's to beat it. And possibly will  )

I did have my boat at LOTO once. That was a true test. On a busy Saturday afternoon, we were running 55-60, jumping cruiser wakes and dodging SeaDoos. What a blast !

Was INXS in 1993 40 Fountain 128mph?

Re: Fastest Non Step V-Hull

Fastest I've heard....

22 velocity - 123mph
260 velocity - 111mph
280 velocity - ??
390 velocity - 117mph

If you do a search on here for fastest velocity, you'll find a thread about it. Doesn't mean they are actually the fastest though.

Baja's stock 35 Outlaw with 700's ran 101mph. Could you imagine if it had the light layup like Poker Face.
