I'm only 4 miles from the airport, but I'd be a lousy tour guide ( I've been here 4 yrs. and have barely seen the city).
The recomendations for the Montgomery Inn for dinner, and Newport on the levee are both good.
Like Dave said, try to hook-up with Chris Reindl.
If ya get something set up let me know, If I've got the time I wouldn't mind meeting up.
