I don't know you or your boating experience, but from what you have posted I would suggest a SAFE BOATING COURSE first. And then lots of seat time at reasonable speeds to get real familiar with your new boat. There is a wealth of information on OSO as to what boat you should buy. After your purchase, your prime consideration should be SAFETY for you, your passengers and other boaters.

Take your wife too. If something happens to either one of you you need to have back up. AND don't forget about the tow vehicle, trailer etc..... unless you are going to dry stack. Then you might as well do a bowrider...
Get the biggest bumpers you can carry, don't skimp on the "lines" and I DONT mean laundry or ski rope.
Honestly though, its alot of homework,,,, check out the insurance rates of each hull and engines,,,,,
Are we having fun yet? Good Luck!

If you are in CA, I would not buy an Activator, Superboat, Kryptonite, or any of the custom Long Island boats. They are excellent boats, but once you've had it for a year and are ready to upgrade, as we all do....you'll be stuck and will have a tough time selling one on the West Coast. Buy an Eliminator, Nordic, DCB, Ultra, or one of the other West Coat boats. For the money you're talking, you can pretty much take your pick. A Cigarette, Formula, or Fountain would also be great boats no matter where you live.
