hmmmm.......250k....any sponsors..

I think one of the problems (other than what T2X stated) with offshore racing is there is no way for the average spectator to identify with the racers. Most of the boats don't look like the average pleasure boat and there is no (boat) brand name or driver recognition so there are no rivalries. The boats are identified by the sponsor name. Who cares about Rio Roses, Reliable caries, etc? Look at NASCAR, everyone has there favorite drivers and makes. Even though they don't really resemble road cars they still are Chevy's vs Ford vs Mopars. Offshore needs Skaters vs Fountains vs Cigarettes vs Outerlimits, etc. Hey, here's an idea, instead of Fountain and Outlimits doing secret top speed runs independantly, why not enter them in a heads up offshore race like Charlie is talking about? Any length boat (V hull only), any power they want, any drivers they want, point A to point B, winner takes all.

Bingo ! Fans love Drama . However the racers choose to distance themselves from one another , so no drama = no personality to root for .. Check out the " SVL MIKLOS" thread in racer general forum . That rivalry always get people fired up . :drink: |

If the boat is ready, I'm going to call Rocky and see if he will come down so we can put him back in his old boat that weekend...should be quite an old school Pt Pleasant event. So, this race will only be a couple of weeks later, if we don't break anything major, I would very much like to participate one more time. This photo I picked up from another thread, but the engines are the same as I just bought from Roger Munn. Looking at mid 700 hp on the dyno, which should be enough to keep up with the pack. I'm counting on the adage that ....Old age and treachery beats youth and enthusiasm any time. |
Beautiful motors Charlie. They look like they just came out of the back side of Denny Hulme's Mk8F!
As I watch myself transition from enthusiastic youth to treacherous old man, I can only say that I'll be pulling for you old farts! Good luck! |

For God sakes!......get the MTIs vs the Skaters.......Tomlinson vs Impressia ...... capitalise on Fountain vs Outerlimits......use it in your print adds........on your radio adds......Its not that difficult.......instead the adds focus on speed and excitment......OK.......so you go to the race (which I have )and its like "OK....theres alot of boats out here......ahhhhhhh who am I supposed to cheer for?.......the blue one ahhhhhh.....looks pretty" I have several race posters in my garage......not ONE mentions an individual. It should be......"OK,see that number (24) boat.....he thinks he's Mr clean Mr perfect.......and that boat number (20....get it!) is Mr Baddazz......I wanna see Baddazz smoke Mr Perfects clock!!" Boat racing DOES NOT understand WHATSOEVER how to make rivalries work for them....... |

Look what happens here when you mention Fountain or Apache in a thread! They need to capitalize on that aspect, owner loyalty. I know I would root for a Baja if they raced one (and Cigarette! :D ). I'm sure anyone that owns a performance boat would root for their brand. I'm really suprised a marketing master like Reggie hasn't grasped on to this. |

Yep- F-1 and F-2. I could relate to that. And if I could scrape together a couple bucks, I could join them. That was good racing. |
Do they throw in wheelchairs and massage therapy? |
I always remember Richard Petty saying why race at 200 when we can put on a show just as good at 150...for a whole lot less money

was there ever a Twister 1? Powerabout |
we justb have one little problem with brand identification wars as far as the general public is concerned..show just about anyone anywhere in the country a pik of an offshore boat, there gonna say "thats on of them there cigarette boats!" show them a pik of a fountain and tell them they can recognise it by the beak, or an outerlimits and explain its pimped out with birdseye maple and ostrich leather... they are gonna say hey..thats a cigarette boat..its the fountain edition, and when they see an outerlimits, they will say thats a cigarette pimp my boat model..think they call it an outer limits or something... you have to search pretty hard to find anything with the market branding of a cigarette boat..doesnt matter who makes it. if it has a beak, ostrich leather, is plain white or looks like its covered in some kind of neon spectral vomit, if its long pointy loud and fast...its a cigarette boat ... the few that can tell the difference own something faster than a bayliner and are probably members here

I don't see why you couldn't...or shouldn't..run a single in the "Modern"....class. Regarding your new 28' hull...... put a single Buzzi on that thing and watch what happens against the larger multi engine hulls...with 250 KM worth of fuel on board..... (I presume one refueling??). That little devil in 6-7 foot seas could be a real sleeper...... Remember you won't be racing at 90-110....this event will level the field speed at around 65-70........... and the aerial photos and video would be amazing......:D :D T2x |

Who is Tx?...poor guy must be old:D To your point I have offered in print on this website...literally miles of suggestions...and predictions....While the predictions come true..... both are ignored.....yet I continue to suggest...and predict. As to the suggestions.... and they have been consistent. 1. Deal in facts...not fan fare. Overhyping the sport and its participants destroys its credibility... Understand that constructive criticism is a good thing and not "negativity", while unconstructive blind optimism is a bad thing and not "possitivity". 2. Look at the current classes with a critical eye......like a spectator with no experience.... you will find that they are too confusing to excite the average joe to come back. There needs to be a single main event feature class that the world, not the racer, can comprehend. 3. Admit that no group has a clue how to televise or even how to get a television contract. Understand that television is the only vehicle you have to create sponsor value. 4. Unify....or die. OPA, OSS, OCS, APBA, SBI, UIM, WTF? 5. Work on a simple plan to attract sponsors, keep race sites, and grow the sport. If the numbers continue to fall, get new leadership. 6. Admit that racers make lousy race promoters, and new racers make lousy (and inexperienced) race promotors. 7. Realise that government by committee yields mediocrity. 8. Understand that the guy with the biggest wallet, bar tab, and mouth is not neccessarily a good leader, nor does he have anyone's interest but his own in mind. 9. Find a real, experienced leader with no private agenda beyond the success of the sport, give him authority, a set of deadlines and a budget to work with......Let him choose his team......Senor David comes to mind each time I bring this up.:D 10. Keep the faith....... you're on a downward curve..fuel prices are soaring.... recreation/boating stocks and budgets are down...so things are likely to worsen before the sun comes out. Just my tired ol' 2 cents. T2x |

was there ever a Twister 1? Powerabout It was an inline 6 with an exhaust silo running down to the lower unit...... Twister 1's were the first attempt at reducing the noise from the "Stackers". There was also a Twister 2...and a Twister 3 (T-3). The T-3 evolved into today's 2.5 race engines. T2x |

Offshore racing HAS rivalries.......why dont they capatalise on them......??? For the past 25 years I have advocated featuring our key personalities in the media. Our best are Stevie, JT, Imprescia, Jeff Harris, Billy Moore, Balough, Dyke, Serrales, Robertson, Sgro and a few others. Rarely do they race against each other, and some are on the beach. How do you emphasize rivalries, personalities and competition, when there is no racing continuity to carry the theme? Personality development and creating a fan base for our sport's key players is yet another casuality of the bewilderment which emanates from too many classes and organizations. T2x |

Rivalries are created by a large number of talented people striving to be the best on a level playing field and achieving this by beating the very best....not one or two guys. Chest thumping is bragging about yourself and trash talking about your competitors every chance you get. This occurs at the bar, in forums like this, and sometimes at race sites. It has hurt the sport immensely and created an image of amateurism and petty finger pointing...and has no place in a true racing environment. To go back to an earlier post, true racing is about keeping your mouth shut and proving your ability on the race course, with humility, respect, and gratitude to your team and the people who work so hard to create a forum for you to race on in the first place. There may be great rivalries today but they exist in the minds of very few people who actually care....and that is a shame. T2x |

When T2X became obsolete, that was @ the day Real Offshore Racing ended in USA, IMO. Thank God There Still Is UIM. *Those who don´t know what a T2X is doesn´t know more about boatracing than a pig about a satellite.
