"Cigarette" boats attack US Navy

They better hope they were issued the Kevlar models. :grinser010:

WASHINGTON — The United States warned Iran on Monday to refrain from any further provocations following a weekend standoff in the Strait of Hormuz, off Iran's coast, that ended after U.S. ships armed their weapons in preparation to defend against threatening Iranian boats.

"We urge the Iranians to refrain from such provocative actions that could lead to a dangerous incident in the future," National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe said Monday.

Pentagon sources say five Iranian Revolutionary Guard speed boats -- described as "cigarette" boats -- charged at the three U.S. Navy ships sailing in the Strait of Hormuz early Sunday en route to the Persian Gulf, FOX News confirmed.

The Iranian boats came within 200 yards of the U.S. ships -- a cruiser, a frigate and a destroyer that U.S. officials said were on a routine transport mission.

The U.S. ships were forced to take defensive action to avoid striking the close-by Iranian boats and armed their weapons, but neither side fired any shots.

The small Iranian boats also reportedly threw boxes into the water ahead of the U.S. boats before speeding off. It could not immediately be determined what was in the boxes.

This story is developing. Click 'refresh' for updates.

The Associated Press, citing an anonymous Pentagon official, said the incident occurred at about 5 a.m. local time Sunday.

"There were no injuries but there very well could have been," the AP source said, adding that the Iranian boats turned away "literally at the very moment that U.S. forced were preparing to open fire" in self defense.

The AP source said he didn't have the precise transcript of communications that passed between the two forces, but the Iranians radioed something to the effect that "we're coming at you and you'll explode in a couple minutes."

Last March, Revolutionary Guard boats intercepted a British vessel, holding naval servicemen aboard the vessel for 15 days before releasing them.

The Strait of Hormuz is located between Oman and Iran and connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Up to 17 million barrels of oil are shipped through Strait of Hormuz each day.

And roughly two-fifths of all seaborne traded oil goes through the Strait of Hormuz. The majority of oil exported from the Strait of Hormuz travels to Asia, the United States and Western Europe.

The best way to prevent that from happening in the future is to transplant some manatees over there. Send the SMC have them sue the governments. Then they can make the whole thing a slow speed zone....

On a serious side....there is NO WAY any of those boats should have been allowed to get within 200 yds of the US Ships. They should have been blown out of the water as soon as they approached in the manner they did and with the radio threat they gave. We need to take agressive stances with these f'ucks and let the chips fall where they may.

CBR 01-07-2008 09:11 PM

The Iranians are upset the U.S. economy and hence oil prices may cooling off, hence the dramatic attempt to scare prices higher. It did not work.

That's the problem. The skippers are so afraid to do anything because the politicians will want to string someone up, if people(the enemy) are killed. The rules of engagement are nuts. They have to blow a hole in the side of your boat before you can respond. Being a former SEAL, I can tell you, having to sit down for a briefing from a LAWYER, before you go in the field, does not instill confidence in your leadership.

Frankie go over there and f__k all of their sheep over there like you do at home. That will make em happy

So true. Believe me, I wish the F/U lawyers would stay out of "WAR". There are no court rooms on a battlefield. It seems no matter how many times we have to learn these lessons, we are always trying to fight with one hand tied behind our backs.

Darrell.

Unfortunately, I don't think the politians actually ever "learn" anything.
I believe enemies of this country know that even with the outstanding men and women of our armed forces, coupled with our firepower which is second to none, we will mire in our political infighting and posturing amongst ourselves to the detriment of the security of this country.:(

Well Said...Reagan said "PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH" but now-a-days we must be too PC and ASK before we shoot.

Last times these fuksticks did this when I was there we decimated them to teach them a lesson, nothing like having superior fire power:evilb:,but hey,I got a medal out of it,Smitty

Smitty, maybe you need to re-enlist, show them how it's done!

I can't believe we put up this BS.

CBR 01-08-2008 10:22 AM

Hats off to Smitty, veteran of a sea battle. Pretty neat!

The navy guys in the latest situation deserve some more free beers too.

They had the discipline and coolness NOT to fire first. The Iranians would have LOVED it at the U.N. if the U.S. HAD fired first.

WMF 01-08-2008 06:28 PM

Hey check out this Video the U.S. Navy released Today, it clearly shows a Cigarette 31 Bullet being used by the Iranian Navy, Check it out! This time the term Cigarette boat was used correctly

It could not immediately be determined what was in the boxes.......I bet they blew them to kingdom come:D Nice little target practice. You know they would not be crazy enough to get close to them....I bet a 50mm cannon took care of them..:waffen093:

TRUST ME :) Those idiots have NO idea of the MASS FIREPOWER of a US Navel warship's potential..........neither do 90% of the civilians!

Being in the Marines for 8 years, I have a real good firsthand idea of firepower...and technology is better today than when I got out 10 years ago. I used to love doing excercises (we call it CAX- Combined Arms Exercise) the tanks, LAV's, aircraft and guns, rockets, missles being fired was AWESOME!!!! When you can witness this, (TV is not the same) you get the real meaning of the word POWER !!

whoya 01-08-2008 07:56 PM

What kind of speedboat is that?
Heres a link to a pic for those of you that didn't see it.
The next pic should have been that thing in pieces floating on the water.

Skeed UP 01-09-2008 08:06 AM

I can not get the video to come up.

Westcoast 01-09-2008 11:03 AM

That is some wild chit...now the fu cksticks are saying we fabed the footage:Whatever:

whatabout1 01-09-2008 11:28 AM

Here's my take.

That cruiser has radar that can scan the water surface to the
horizon. So they knew those boats were coming for a long time.

So

- Staged ? For some political reason. Don't think so.

or

- Let them get close, see what they are up to, then follow
them home with a drone at 30k ft. Maybe find the whole navy.

And release the video for that politcal reason.

salesmanship 01-09-2008 12:19 PM

Never even thought about it and we don't know if it was staged but..
Does it seem kind of odd that they're wearing PFD's?
I can't enlarge it enough but the guy sitting in back on the starboard side doesn't look real Iranaian either.....
Just have to wonder....???

No way, get them before they get us...

If you had a few thugs hangin around outside your house late at night, and they are coming up on your porch - what do you do? I say take action and don't wait until they make a move.
