BUT, a thread w jc, tyler, dean gellner, artie, strip poker, raylar, sutphen 30 and many others , CLASSIC!!

I thought this thread title was a joke.
My experiences with 540ci were nothing but positive. (One valve failure) but that's part of game.

You want start with a tall deck block to get better rod ratio I think that's what your engine builder didn't like with the standard deck it's hard on the pistons my 3 cent Oyay I had 540s and loved them tall decks

Ive ran boosted 4.25 stroke short deck for 100's of hours with 1.280 ch with no major problems BUT ran 14 psi boost and freshened motor every 100-120 hours, I do see on perf trends engine analyzer where it shows the increased piston speed has higher parasitic loss at higher rpms. In a ideal world i suppose if you could bore a bbc to 4.750 and use a 4" stroke to get 540 cu inches it would net more hp, Smitty

Several years ago I was at Lightning Performance speaking with Keith Eickert about a 540 build and he absolutely refused to build one based off a short deck block. I found that interesting since so many others do it without issue.

Was doing some research on GM Crate ZZ 502 stuff and 540's and this thread showed up. Started reading, it was like a train wreck. Couldn't look away.
