Diesel engines in speed boat

The Yanmar 6LY series went through the same evolution as the Cummins 5.9. Yanmar 6LY2 vs Cummins 6BT 5.9 (2 valve mechanical injection)evolved to Yanmar 6LY3 vs Cummins QSB 5.9 (4 valve electronic injection).
Weight Yanmar is slightly lighter.
Displacement Cummins 5.9 vs Yanmar 5.8
Smoke on the mechanical Side Cummins wins. On the electronic side its a dead heat.
Durability Cummins wins hands down.
Horsepower potential Cummins can be tweaked and squeaked up to a 1000 hp albeit with some loss in durability.
Now for the kicker when it comes to servicing the newer electronic systems Cummins has more service capabilities in more areas.

Thanks, great info on this thread...Nortech is doing a Cummins right now, as well as a few Yanmars.

This thread needs more pics !! The Cummins ( 2 ) that will go into the 50 that is destined for Greece I believe and pic 3 is the trip Yanmars about to go into my boat. I expect to run about 10 MPH faster ( mid 70's ). Anything goes wrong with a drive or engine I will cruise back to port at 50 MPH +/- on any two.

I agree on the trips on your boat Bob.. I asked Terry if 2 of those Cummins would fit into a 43..he said to much weight...back to the drawing board.
It would be nice if someone would make about 400-425 hp in a BB configuration that would be as reliable as the Cummins or Yanmar in stock form, so I could put 3 in a 43 for my next project..that would work..

Now for those who doesnīt know the Sisu Team did dominate 3 yrs in a row the series and got tired of winning...
Here s Link of one of the trucks.
Iīm quite close with that team especially the driver as Iīve built sevaral race car for him later.

Sure, at the expense of...weight...so I have 2 choices with my present hull...2 I-6's that need to be as light as the present 480hp Yanmars..BUT.PRODUCING 550-600hp...or 3 lighter V-8 versions....
Presently there is nothing out there...
