Firefox,
I have been on the fence for awhile about re powering my boat with diesels. I like the boat alot but can't seem to commit myself to at least five more years of ownership.
But if I did I it was suggested to me by a dealer that performs alot of repowers that I would get the most bang for my buck by going with Cummins 370b's.
Boat is a 42 Harley weighing in @ approx 15,000 lbs
Current power is twin 502's 415hp 1.5:1 gears and Arneson Drives turning 18X21 three bladed rolla's (old style)
I get close to 50mph WOT and cruise easily low the high 30's.
He is suggesting the 370b's would give me the same if not higher cruise speed and losing a little top end, which is fine by me. He suggested using 1.3:1 gears, making it possible to use the same props. They would fit easily without alot of modification to engine room.
Would do you think? Performance and fuel burn? Drives are rated at 650 ft lbs of torque, but I'm sure they could take more than that, I'm not a stick bender anyway. Boat is used for long cruises and offshore fishing. It has 850 gal fuel capacity in three tanks. Repower guy said I could take out one tank and still have more range. Really? This guy seems very honest and knowledgable. but I would like your opinion too.
thanks,
Steve

Ole boy right on 3 points. The 6BT-370hp " 370B" being a 2 valve mechanical injected is one of the best deals for your money. It will give you better prolonged cruise speed than the 502s. As far as fuel consumption goes check this article out.

Marine Gear, Arneson and Props talk to RIK he is on this thread he can get you fixed up perfect on those things.
Here is a list of things to keep in mind.
1. If you purchase new don't skimp on new batteries. Buy new ones and make sure they have enough amp hours.
2. If you buy used or rebuilt engines and they are equipped the old style sheet metal aftercoolers have them replaced with current type cast metal aftercoolers.
3. Make sure they install proper sized sea chests and thru hulls for the raw water system.
4. Keep the exhaust free flowing as possible. Under no circumstances use a "Push Up" waterlock type muffler.
Give me a holler if you need any more info. Also go here for downloads pertaining to this engine

Thank you for your advice,I have been looking those specs. When I tell to retailer, where I am,they begin to talk about their territories.I am in Europe and would like to buy a boat from USA.Therefor it is quite difficult to get price information from USA for example about these Cummins diesel engines. My interest is cummins QSD4.2 350hp,QSB5,9 425hp,440hp and 480hp and there would be Arneson surface drives.Any idea, where I could get price information?

If your building the boat in the US The builder or if there is an intermediate contractor will determine which Cummins territory will sell you the engine. What is the end use country? Out side of the US, I might be able to help you a little.

Yanmar vs Cummins
Weight Yanmar is slightly lighter.
Displacement Cummins 5.9 vs Yanmar 5.8
Smoke on the mechanical Side Cummins wins. On the electronic side its a dead heat.
Durability Cummins wins hands down.
Horsepower potential Cummins can be tweaked and squeaked up to a 1000 hp albeit with some loss in durability.
Now for the kicker when it comes to servicing the newer electronic systems Cummins has more service capabilities in more areas.
