They are nickel plated brass.
I just replaced all my snaps on the AT with Stainless ones that I ordered from them. They had both the nickel plated brass and SS in regular snaps. I also ordered some other SS bolts from them. Shipped quick and correct and the shipping charge was cheap.

West Marine & McMaster-Carr are aluminum. I replace all mine last winter. They now look like crap.
I have not found stainless or chrome plated brass. I am sure those would look better. Where can I get those???

This one says it's stainless. Not sure if it justifies a fiver apiece though

Anything you can buy for 5 bucks for a Cigarette is cheap! I don't care how many of them you need. Step up and get the stainless ones and you will probably never replace them again.
