The area I am looking at does not allow for a lift type dock, and I'm limited to the two exitsing pilings to attach to.
Where you putting it in at? Permitting is a PITA and yes you need one. Salt or fresh? Which county. I have a couple sources for permitting from when I put in a dock.

Sunstream in Auburn makes the nicest but they are EXTREMELY overpriced.

Marine Floats is trying to unload a never used Hydrohoist. They won't tell you that they have it because of permitting gone bad though. It is Fire sale priced and brand new. There are (private) people out patrolling for non-permitted floats and turning people into the authorities. The main guy is between Horsehead and the Fox Island bridge. The Tacoma News Tribune had a big hero worship article on him about a year ago.

actually looking at the other coast. I am looking at a house on Cape Cod that has a traditional dock allready, I don't think the powers to be will allow alterations to the piling system, but I could see them allowing the existing dock to be replaced with a jet dock style system.
Still in the investigation stages at this point.
