River search for boat occupants

CALIFORNIA – Several police departments and water rescue teams are searching the Ohio River for the occupants of a speedboat that may have flipped Friday evening.

Cincinnati police received numerous calls around 8:10 p.m.

One caller said there may have been two people onboard when the boat flipped.

Another witness said the boat was going erratically before it rolled.

The speedboat was found empty, going in circles on the river just north of Coney Island, near Shelter Cove Marina, according to preliminary reports.

It was unclear where the accident may have happened.

Rescue crews from Campbell and Kenton counties were on the scene.

Just saw this reported on local news. Video showed the boat and rescue crews. Boat looked like an older all white "offshore" style boat with race fairing. Reporter said boat was found "circling out of control with no one on board" ... no lanyard??? At 11:10 pm still looking for 2 occupants thrown from the boat and un-accounted for. Boat was upright and didn't look damaged on the video clip.

DareDevil 05-30-2008 10:29 PM

Bob, where was this ?

Raceboat or like a raceboat ?

INFO ,please !!!!!!!!!:(

bob_t 05-30-2008 10:33 PM

Just north/east of Coney Island (I-275 bridge) in Cincinnati. Looked like maybe an older AT or Scarab. Couldn't tell length of boat from video clip.

DareDevil 05-30-2008 10:38 PM

Hope they find them in ok shape !
No lineyard is stupid and sad.
People need to be alot safer with boating thats for shure.

Thanks for INFO.

Chris Sunkin 05-30-2008 10:46 PM

No lanyard? It's bad enough getting tossed overboard. It's a biitch to have to try to swim away from your own un-manned boat as it circles back at you.

bob_t 05-30-2008 10:52 PM

Not a good way to start our boating season for "performance boats". A couple of years ago a guy in a big Baja "cigarette boat" ran over a family in a little runabout and kept going. That summer, the water police stopped just about every performance boat every chance they got.

bsebesy 05-30-2008 11:03 PM

News said the boat turned abruptly, maybe to avoid river debris, or because it hit awake wrong. The driver and passanger were thrown out, and the boat was found circling in the river between Coney and river downs, as of 11:00 the people are still missing. The boat looked like an all white 35 mistress. Thoughts and prayers to them and their families.

BLAZE 05-30-2008 11:10 PM

The search-and-rescue operation continues for at least two boaters tossed into the Ohio River Friday night.

Rescuers found the speedboat downstream from Coney Island, but no sign of the boaters.

Witnesses tell 9News they saw the boat speeding on the Ohio River between the I-275 bridge and Rivertowne Marina, when suddenly the speed boat turned sharply and the bow dipped briefly below the surface.

Fisherman on the riverbank saw a large spray of water, like a rooster tail, then watched as the now-empty boat idled in circles, flowing downstream with the current.

Rescue boats from multiple Ohio and Kentucky agencies converged on the scene, but they were delayed by at least 10-minutes because the initial call gave the location at the Big Mac (I-471) bridge downtown – miles from the actual scene.

Confusion persisted once they got to the general area as the empty boat drifted in the current nearly a mile from where the occupants were ejected.

Rescue boats circled in vain – searching a long stretch of dark, churning water – with no one in sight.

Sonar devices and search lights are being used, but divers were not searching in the water late Friday night.

Authorities do know the owner of the boat is from Ohio.

Bad news.

And yes, here come the lanyard lectures. What is soooo hard to get through peoples heads???!!! Put the dam thing on before you put the boat on plane.

Wild Card 09 05-31-2008 08:31 AM

Using the lanyard would have resulted in a different outcome. Pfds and lanyard would have pretty much solved the issue by now, even if the ejected crew were injured.

However, what gets me about the story, is how come both motors dropped to idle.

God help the two of them.

This was posted unde the comments section of one of the web news reports:

The guy that owns the boat is Rudy Crandle,a very good friend of mine. One of the best guys you would ever want to know with a big heart. How this could happen to such a good person god will only know. The other gentelmen was Jerry Cooly another great guy.I prayed for both of their saftey but now at 7:41 AM ON SATURDAY and there has been no word of rescue I know the worst is to be expected.Randy gave so much and expected very little in return thats just the way he was,he will be deeply missed by a lot of people.Randy was a very experianced boater who has been navagating the mighty Ohio for many years and has showed me a thing or too.

Chris Sunkin 05-31-2008 08:42 AM

If nothing else, it would have been helpful for rescuers to have a big white boat somewhere near the ejectees.

If a guy doesn't want to wear a lanyard and a jacket, then I have no sympathy for them when they die- they were asking... begging for it. What I have a problem with is after you get tossed, where does your unguided missile continue on to? Who else do you take with you?

If you don't care about you, why should I? But, if you're so self-centered and ignorant that you can't be troubled to take a minor, non-intrusive step to prevent injury or death to someone else, then you have no business owning a boat.

Not all throttles have friction stays in them. On raceboats where you're working the throttles constantly, you'd want as little friction as possible and enough return spring on the throttles to pull them shut.

I somewhat agree - A kill lanyard is such a minor inconvenience..... and not an issue to others. In the Mirages and STV's we wore two of them - one for the ignition and one for the fuel pump. But for some odd reason people think that because the boat is bigger and less likely to blow over, a lanyard is not necessary. I've hooked a 30ft + boat at a high rate of speed - it sucks. Damn lucky it didn't roll. I wear my lanyard 99% of the time. ALWAYS when on plane. Experiencing a steering failure running 80+ in a small V-bottom will get your attention ...... and cost you a weeks vacation looking for the damn thing....

My prayers go out to the families.

Pulled this pic from another site. The boat on the news story blurb video looked awfully similar to this boat.
Not sure if this was the boat but it is supposedly local.

MacGyver 05-31-2008 09:04 AM

Last year I hardly wore mine. I found it inconvenient. This year I got a comfortable wrist strap from Tres Martin Performance and will ALWAYS wear mine. It only takes a few extra seconds to be a responsible boater.

I agree that wearing a lanyard is good for all and don't like the idea of unguided missles.

On the other hand, I don't know their situation, was not there and am no judging them. I do have sympathy for them. That was a horrible thing to happen to anyone.

BlackJack58 05-31-2008 09:23 AM

Is is fairly easy to add a lanyard/kill switch? My Formula 242 doesn't have one, and though it will probably not see 60mph - I've heard of people getting dumped out at speeds far less than that. :(

I have a healthy paranoia about these situations, and not a lot of experience running at high speeds...

Very easy if you have access to the back of your dash. Might be a little more difficult if you need to pull your gauge package out to gain access. But if you feel the need for one, its well worth it.

When sensitivity starts bringing people back from the dead, I'll be the first guy in line. Sometimes people have to be shocked into taking action. Many simply don't believe it could happen to them or don't even realize that a possibility exists and a solution that prevents it.

Life jackets? Do we even need to discuss the merits of wearing life jackets?

If a few more boaters install lanyards or start using the one's they have as a result of being confronted by the cold reality that it's dangerous and stupid to not have these crucial safety devices, then I'm perfectly willing to bear the burden of being the insensitive a$$hole that delivers the message.

Out of character??
A slap in the face reality check from Chris? I'm used to seeing that. It's hard to take sometimes, but it's pretty honest.
As far as the fellow boaters, at this point we can only hope for a recovery.
Unfortunately, that outcome looks unlikely at this point.

Chris Sunkin 05-31-2008 10:35 AM

Maybe I'm just feeling a little crusty this morning. Or maybe I'm growing weary at seeing someone else needlessly die in a sport that I'm pretty fond of. And I can't believe there's any shred of debate on the merits of using safety equipment, or that some (many) people still don't use it.

People talk about having sensitivity for those they left behind. I think the most insensitive thing a person can do is needlessly expose themselves to easily avoidable risks that ultimately lead to their demise. If their families are feeling pain today, I would submit to you that the majority of it comes from the fact that these people are gone. And, now they have to live with the thoughts that no one had to die and likely wouldn't have had there been proper use of safety equipment.

If you boat and don't wear vests and lanyards, or if you consume alcohol and operate your boat, think about these people's families this morning- then think about your own. Consider the pain and burden they'll bear if you're not there.

I have to say I agree. Boating is fun. Drinking and partying is fun. But the 2 are a deadly combination. Most of us do it, but the way to do it is to just idle back home. It's hard to get hurt at 5knts. If you are going to be that far away from home that you have to go fast to get home either don't drink or sleep on the boat 'til morning.

For your sake Chris Sunkin I hope you didn't really mean what you said about not having sympathy for these dead powerboaters. That is just plain rotten. We have all errored and not been bit. I find those people who take the highest moral ground on topics are generally the biggest offenders and the least moral on the subject matter at hand..

I miss the old days when somebody would invariably chime in with
something like: "I've been boating 25 years and a I've never seen

people?

The Big O is an ever-changing creature. I'm always very careful the first couple of times out each year just trying to steer clear the "new" stick-ups. That section of river appeared to be really narrow.

Let me say again - I don't know if that was the boat. It is just known as a local boat, and was very similar to the quick shot I saw on the news this morning.
I don't want to start any rumors that are untrue.
