Speedboat flips in Barnegat Bay
My boss was telling me this morning that he helped rescue 8 people, (3 of them children) who were thrown out of a "Cigarette" boat which flipped on Barnegat Bay Sunday. My boss claimed the boat was doing figure 8's and donuts when the incident occured. He estimated the boat was 30-35', he said it was difficult to tell the length because the boat was upside down with it's bow sticking up, the stern was stuck in the mud. He said it was a yellow and white hull. SeaTow showed up quickly and claimed it would be a "salvage" opposed to a "tow" (bastar..s). Does anyone have a any other info? The accident happened about 4pm a mile north of Tice's shoal. A nasty thunderstorm was coming in at the same time. The passengers were transported to Barnegat Municipal dock.

Wow,
I was just docking my boat as the Storm arrived. I had seen a 29 fountain step hull with 2 guys driving completely out of control in the Bay just before the storm, When I first read this thread title I figured it had to be them. They were runnin around trying to race everything in sight pushing there boat WAY to hard. At one point as he tried to catch us I looked back and the boat was literally sideways and then slapping back and forth to the other side so hard I thought he was going over. Total idiot. Hopefully everyone in the above mentioned accident was OK. |
i just searched every site i can think of and no mention of it yet
|
I was on the boardwalk when the storm started. Nasty day.
|
i was on a 39 OL bout 1:30ish by the manahawkin bridge as it started to get dark...was in brick when the heavens opened
|
I hope all involved are ok.
I was @ my parents bayfront house in Barnegat and didn't see anything unusual between 4 and 5. We had a window where all the storms went North and South of us and we never got a drop of rain. |
We were on Barnegat Bay Sunday at 5 30 ish went from the Rt 37 bridge to almost the Lighthouse i saw a Seatow boat heading north , but i saw just a few boats on the Bay
|
We were also out at about 5:30 for an hour or so. We ran to about the BB marker and back home to the bridge. I only saw a handful of boats out and nothing going on.
|
I searched and couldn't find anything either. My Dad lives on the bay and he hasn't heard anything yet either.

You know where you stand with me I was hoping we could all be together down in AC and tear up the town for a night or two |
No mention in any of the regular places and not confirmed by anyone so far.
I would imagine that this may just be a rumor. |
This is NOT a rumor, I just called the Barnegat Light Coast Guard who confirmed a "performance" boat with 6 people "capsized". They would not give me specific details as to who owned the boat or what the manufacture was.
If you don't believe this, call the US Coast Guard yourself 609 494-2661. |
Capo......... Give us the scoop
|
Perhaps someone with connections (Coast Guard) could get more info? Anyone?

Mount Laurel, NJ Reply » |Report Abuse |Judge it! |#1 Monday Jun 16 My family and I were coming home from the BI buoy in Barnegat Bay yesterday afternoon and my son turned around and saw a boat with half the stern under water. I had the whole family in the boat and didnt want to turn around and there were other boats in the area helping out. I check it out with my binoculars and it went completely under and sunk. Just wondering if anyone heard anything about this and if there were any injuries? I had heard that it was a ciggarette boat and it flipped, but that's just word of mouth. There was a wonderful family that got to the scene immediately and apparently took the family to the municipal pier where they were met by emergency technicians and the Barnegat and state police. The family was taken to the hospital just to be certain everyone was OK. Greg Mount Laurel, NJ Reply » |Report Abuse |Judge it! |#3 Monday Hey, thanks. I appreciate it. I was nervous that there were more severe injuries. Do you know how it happened? Was it a ciggarette boat? Mary Roseland, NJ Reply » |Report Abuse |Judge it! |#4 Tuesday The guy took a sharp right, then attempted a sharp left and went over his own wake. Yes, it was a cigarette boat. Found out that the wife did have a fractured right leg I believe. http://www.topix.com/forum/city/fork...J7TCA9JA5BTLPM |

I hope everyone's ok. Sounds like the Top Gun that was re-powered at Cobra Power last winter.
|
I was thinking the same thing...hope all are OK.

One of the last posts says he was dropping it in the water May 08 for the first time this year. Glad everyone is ok. |
with all the work done it sounds like it was mechanical.. he does not seem like the type to do figure eights around the bay...
hea a very nice guy.... hope all is well.. |
I saw that boat heading in the opposite direction. Toward the Dutchman.
|
I just knew my comments would get this this thread going again. :drink:
|
Does anyone know how he flipped it? Other than he took a sharp right and a left and hit his own wake?
Big boat and a great hull, just wondering what went wrong. Thanks, Mike |

To all who are inquiring about the accident by Manahawkin Inlet. If you were not there I would appreciate the false accusations to stop. I was there and I was ejected from the boat and it was a very traumatic experience. My husband has driven a boat for over 25 years and is the most responsible person i know when it comes to boating. Whoever is giving you information is so unbelievably wrong its not funny. He doesnt even have the make, color or length correct. We were not doing crazy eights and were definetely not out of control prior to this. My children were on board and I would never allow that to happen on anyones boat never mind my own. We are all OK, thank god, just alot of aches and pains. Irene
