Some Samller Boat "X", Drive Discussion
Please no TD insights Either.....
With that said, I am removing my OMC right now to get ready for my winter project. I am replacing it with a Bravo 1 set up. Hopefully an IMCO shorty if finances are there. I had a coversation today with Jim V about new propshaft heights on my 24 Challenger. He recommended about 1.750" from the bottom of the boat. It seemed to be the consensus at Hot Boat with similar 24-28 singles that were fast running in or below 2". We thought I could gain some of the distance by simply raising the motor a bit because I have room and plan on reglassing the transom anyway. Believe it or not, with an OMC King Cobra, the current prop shaft is 7.250". I have to slice out more than 5 inches to get to current schools of thought. Does anyone have an idea as to the actual difference in length between an OMC and Bravo. Mounted in the same location, is their prop shaft the same, up, or down? Thoughts on any real effects of raising the motor two inches? Just looking for some ideas to get the drive height up. Any non TD thoughts would be appreciated.

Part of the height discussion depends on whether the boats used as examples have notched transoms or extension boxes.
Those will generally allow you to raise the drive more. Raising the drive that much will probably require the use of a modern 4 or 5 blade prop. Until about ten years ago the best prop we had was the Mirage 3 blade. It had to be run very deep. That being said, I would tend to be conservative. Raise it 2 or 3 inches and then use shorter lowers or spacers to find where the boat runs best.
