Skater Speeds. Please Enlighten Me.

I've been procrastinating for some time now, but wanted to touch on this.

In the December 08 Powerboat a Skater 388 was tested. Now I've always considered Skater as a simple no frills speed demon. Period. However I was quite surprised to see this boat, with 1200 horse mills only topped out at 154. I realize 154 is impressive but is it? For a 38 foot Skater with 1200s, no cabin, and as the artice states, "The 388 Skater didn't have much for stowage options in its cockpit".

Take a 36 Nor-Tech. A boat set-up as much for pleasure and comfort as for speed. Cabin, bed, toilet, stowage. And runs 160 with 1150s.

Don't mean to start a world of $hit here, but doesn't 154mph leave a little to be desired with 1200s? In a new 38' Skater?

When they test these boats they are not "Long Propped" meaning they are propped for all around performance. They want the boat to accelerate and run a decent top end. When they tested "Bad" 40 Skater it went 157 on the limiters but we had it to 165 with big wheels on it.

I know of a 388 that runs 131 on 525's.....about 560 h.p.:evilb:

It's a boat test. My 388 ran 174.8 on the limiters with JT and I running it. Nor-tech with the same power runs about 160

HotPursuit 12-28-2008 10:48 PM

1200s maybe not!!!

I don't believe this to be a correct statement either.....the 36' NorTech is slower than this.....with 1150's

My only complaint about the 388 skater is that it needs a swim platform and the deck is a little too hard for me.

You just need CAT like reflexes:evilb::party-smiley-004:

My old dog, 140@6100 with 900 per side, with the right wheels maybe 145? Aint no nortech seeing those speeds.
Not with 900's anyway.

I wouldn't expect a nortech to obtain the same speed with the same power as a skater. skater is built soley for flat out speed. no frills...

they are a hull with seats and motors.

Thats why I was surprised with the top speed of the 38' test boat with 1200s.

Brad Zastrow 12-29-2008 08:38 PM

Ask this same question with Mercuy power that should be same in each boat. Say a 1075 package. No way the Nortech will hang with the Skater. Only other boat that will beat the Skater is a MTI :food-smiley-007:

silverskater40 12-29-2008 09:03 PM

Skater 388- 175mph with 1200's-Gatorone
nortech 36-160 mph with 1200's-Loose Cannon
MTI 36-170mph with 1200's-first red 36

all big numbers, all great boats.

aint no MTI 39 going to beat a 388 Skater ever

FREEDOM US1 12-29-2008 09:31 PM

Going to try for 150mph with 1200 in the 46 Skater this weekend!! Its big and heavy but its a Skater. Ill let you know how it turns out!!!

silverskater40 12-29-2008 09:46 PM

Jimmy, talked to Johnny today, with the new wheels and the 1.29's I think you'll attain that easily , I think you can add 5more, good luck and be careful, Our old Skaters can still run with those new MTI's.

That's right, Old Skaters can still provide some good numbers. It should work. Thanks!!!

Your probably right. All it says is it was "set up" to run at lake tahoe....thus the gearing and prop choice.
