The 300xs 2-stroke is better on fuel than the 275 or 300 Verado and the same as the 250 Verado

Are you saying a Mercury Optimax uses 2 times more fuel than an equivalent sized 4 stroke outboard ?

It's just odd to have a performance boat with a quiet motor. I would not be able to get used to it. The fact that you are using outboards is bad enough, the fact you want to go with quiet ones is just odd. What I liked about my promax 300's is that they would rattle the boat and make it feel like a performance boat. My dad would actually get nervous on the boat (when it was idling) because he thought they were misfiring. My brother and I discussed moving to Verados if we would need a replacement but it just would not be the same.

So to answer your question............ 2 stroke.

On a 27' boat without a doubt the 300 XS is the way to go. Better power to weight ratio. Better performance period.

It has been proven that the Verado is not all that great on fuel mileage. In fact there was a test in BWB that went head to head 250 Verado against 250 XS. The XS out accelerated the Verado and got better fuel economy.

The 350 Merc is a big pig, way too heavy to put a pair on a 27' boat at almost 700 lbs apiece. Plus they are $29,000 each.

A few points missed... Yes the 300XS has the best power to weight ratio, but it requires premium fuel only. So if you are somewhere without 91-93 your done.
For true performance, the Mercs gearcase will out last the others. (but sucks up water and requires frequent oil changes)
The E-tec 250HO makes more hp that the Yami 300HPDI.
The E-tec 250HO is the smoothest of the two strokes.
The Merc and the Evinrude are the lightest.
The Suzuki 300 is the lightest fourstroke. And prehaps the best on fuel.
The two strokes with equal power will out accelerate a in-board by a huge margin.

How fast do you want this 27 vee bottom to run. We are running just over 90mph with twin 250s on our 28 vee.

They have the full deal, variable valve timing, super smooth etc, etc. The problem for us is all our stuff runs faster than the factory planned for. So the gear ratios are all too high, and its hard to get big enough props, and then with the single OB boats there skeg is very small for the motor heights we run.
But we still like it better than the weight of the Verado.
