The Merc 250 XS has a weird RPM thing. To run just over 90mph we ran some Bravo 36s to hold the RPM down in the power of about 5500. But day to day we like the 32s for huge acceleration, but we are in the limiter alot. We should have gone with the .62 gears instead of the .75s

Tuff, I love that 28' with the 250's. Nice boat.

A few points missed... Yes the 300XS has the best power to weight ratio, but it requires premium fuel only. So if you are somewhere without 91-93 your done.
For true performance, the Mercs gearcase will out last the others. (but sucks up water and requires frequent oil changes)
The E-tec 250HO makes more hp that the Yami 300HPDI.
The E-tec 250HO is the smoothest of the two strokes.
The Merc and the Evinrude are the lightest.
The Suzuki 300 is the lightest fourstroke. And prehaps the best on fuel.
The two strokes with equal power will out accelerate a in-board by a huge margin.

How fast do you want this 27 vee bottom to run. We are running just over 90mph with twin 250s on our 28 vee.

you sound like you know what your talking about.

what props are you spinning?

We seem to like the Merc Bravo stuff. It is easy for us to get and lots around to try. We usually need bow lift, so that works for us.

But we would like to try some of the specialty stuff like Power-up and herring, but its a bigger financial commitment.

It may be just me, but I LOVED my old school 2-strokes! Carbed 2.5's (245 HP stock). Put on small cc heads to bump the compression and 110 HP nitrous oxide kits from Hydrodynamics (Nitrox). Used alcohol as the enrichment fuel. Can you say HP-to-weight ratio?...:p Loud, smokey, smelly, and bad a$$!:evilb:

100% reliable until a propshaft let go at 8000+rpm on the bottle and she spun a crank bearing. No rev limiter - doh!. They would touch 9000 rpm on the bottle. Hearing those in 'stereo' at that rpm was better than sex! (well almost..):grinser010::eek::evilb:

Dustin, what type of upgrades do you offer for these outboards? That was the one thing I didn't like about my old 2.5's. No aftermarket other than bumping the compression or nitrous. I guess there is that SVS system, but never heard much about it.
