You can connect the speedo input to the NEMA output of a compatable GPS and do away with the antenna. I have done this a few times using a Garmin handheld with the power/data cable. There are a couple of threads on this.
Just another option. The gauge has red(+), black(-), and white (signal?) I have a Garmin 492 GPS. I'm assuming I should connet the NMEA out (blue) to the white wire on the gauge? Oh, and my speedo came with an extra plug for the antenna that only had a single white wire. So, I was able to rig it without hacking up the harness that goes to the antenna. |

Well, I changed the battery, and yes folks, it's a piece of cake...one thing though...my problem did NOT go away. I checked the battery again using a meter and I have 2.93v across the battery ( it's a 3v Battery) I only left the key on for a minutes in the garage so question: Do I need to wait a while? Does the antenna need to be outside and re-acquirer satellites?

I just got my antenna back from Livorsi last week and 87 bucks later. What a rip off. I tried to unscrew the cap but thought I would ruin it. Wish I would have seen this thread two weeks ago before I got screwed for a $3.00 battery.

Here is information from Livorsi Marine.
If using your own GPS unit (Ex: Garmin, Lawrence), make sure you have connected the "output" to white pigtail in back of gauge. Make sure unit is set up to communicate with speedometer. (NMEA 0183 Version 2.0-3.01, Baud rate-4800, transmitted sentence-GPRMC) |
So remind me, if GPS speedo works fine but recall function does not, what should I look for as possible problems ?

The red and black need to be conencted to 12v and ground. Be sure to use the same gound for the GPS and Speedo.

Here is a link to another thread with GPS info. In the next to the last post, Velocity Vector has several good links with hook ups and troubleshooting. http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/g...dometer-2.html |

At first it did not work, I had to go into the GPS setup and change the default "Garmin Data" to "NMEA in and Out" I don't think I'm using the same ground for both GPS and Speedo though. I change that next chance I get. |
I've got an Autometer GPS speedo, that goes thru it's normal power-up routine, then swings back to zero, THEN rises to about 4-5 mph and sits there. It seems to work just fine going down the river, just sitting still it reads 3-5 mph?
Thanks, Dean |
