blacklabmarine - you help us
You see this thread went all over with no real answers, because you didn't provide enough information - let's start over if you want?
What is this boat intended to do, what is the desired cruise, what is the range, how many hours a year do expect it to be run, how many hours at cruise, how many hours at WOT, is it open cockpit or an enclosure (aero styled or squared patrol boat), where will it operate - the bay, ocean, rivers. These things determine what you need for power and cubic inches to reach your goals - everyone here is right in their choice of Yanmar and they are also right that Yanmar won't get the job done for other applications. They also determine what kind of hull you should have, all this theory about steps and so on, useless if not in the right application. Just my opinion, let's build the boat virtual on here and see where we go? |

However same displacement of 14L Komatsu Marine builds their 6M140A5 that will give you the 800+ ponies you need to close the deal and its a lot less likely to grenade than a C-15:cool:
A Friend of mine is Two times European Truck Racing Champion years ago with a Sisu Truck and they had no problems taking 1000hp out of a N11---- If somebody needs help on the matter I might be there for you... Another one is my current workhorse the MAN diesel straight six at 12.8 litres. MAN has been very succesful on the Racing circuits lately as they have what Iīve heard thru the grapevine a Hp advantage..among other things. Regarding tuning the wick up on a diesel Iīd run away from a CAT unless I want to oil my bilge... |

Not meaning to be in your face Jass but take either one of them boats throw in minimal armor, self sealing fuel tanks big enough to have functional patrol range, Crew of 2 + 6 meat eaters carrying full combat load, one crew serve w/ammo (50 cal or 40 mikemike) full electronics and I'll bet ya they never get on plane. Thats if they didn't sink at the dock as the last ole boy jumped in.:eekdrop:
Hereīs a 47 ( at 26000+lbs) with a top speed of 60+mph on ANY condition. (No-step, surface drives and C-11īs) http://www.fotodagboken.nu/blogphoto...helikopter.jpg |

Gents,
Our DNA is in moderate speed outboard boats (think 50 knot top speed). We have a requirement for a 42' x 10' deep-vee, monohull with diesel power. We (obviously) will be making the hull out of marine-grade aluminum alloy but are starting today to look at powering the hull. What I would ask of you folks is the following: 1) If you had to have diesel power and needed to push this boat 60-65 knots (70 mph+) What powerplant would you use and how would you get that power to the water?

2) Our general group of naval architects and engineers will all tell me that they have the knowledge/expertise to do this project although none of them specialize in high-speed boats.
I'm sure that there are some specialists in high-speed design for both hulls and propulsion systems - any suggestions would be helpful. 3) Stepped hull or no steps?

This boat because of its mission profile will be heavier than the hulls you guys are used to. For a 42' will be looking at @ 12,000lbs w/o power or fuel.
Lastly, we're using the 60 knot number as a minimum - looooove to go faster. |

You might also consider a beak on the bow...you could market as a 46'....

This is my advice take it or leave it - you already said you need diesel. This is most probably a goverment type application so anything other than off the shelf product can't even be considered. Your building a big, heavy and wider(?) boat I guess. Steps or not, your not going fast enough to make that much difference (people will argue that but any straight bottom can go 70 mph with ease) Look at what Magnum has done, see what engines (Cat or Cummins) and drives (Arenson) they run and go from there - they make big heavy boats that go fast! Trying to go do all kinds of things to copy the fiberglass builders will get you no where fast. Find an aluminium Cougar monohull - measure it, study it and copy it - it works, it goes fast, it's proven in a sea, etc, etc - Just my 2 cents? Regarding Aluminum V- bottom Cougars.. Iīd also look at CUVīs... http://558cinzanobianco.blogspot.com/ 2009 Cowes-Torquay-Cowes Official Race Result 1. - 558 - Cinzano - CUV/Ilmor 2. - R2 - Hot Lemon - Scorpion/Yanmar 3. - 47 - Relentless - Revenger/Mercury 4. - R14 - Team Scorpion - Scorpion/Yanmar 5. - 343 - Carbon Neutral - Revenger/Mercury 6. - 18 - Power Products - Phantom/Yamaha 7. - 130 - The Fugative - Shakespear/Yanmar 8. - 100 - Blastoff - Fountain/Mer |
