Not at all bro....I got those pics 3-4 years ago when they were testing the duramax motor for marine use. Never heard what the outcome was or where the boat ended up.
I'm still curious too. Eliminator used the 480hp Cummins/Mercruiser diesels for their 43' V bottom project. The boat ran 75mph the last I heard and was getting 3mpg. Nice eh... :) |

Nice eh... :) That says 3 things.. either the Yanmar/Arneson package is slightly better performing on a 2000 lb heavier 43' boat or the bottom design is better on the Nor-Tech vs the legendary race bottom of the Scarab/Eliminator. AND.. they were set up with stagged Cummins. Ive been trying to figure this out since I really liked the way the Eliminator turned out. Was it the application, the bottom design of the boat, or was it really the Yanmar vs the Cummins a better performing piece. |
just watched a few vids on the 43 Elim. you tube .. the Cummins boat rides slightly more forward.. vs the 1075 boat..That has something to do with it. Curios if the stagger helped or hindered the speed.

I'm being hubristic, but I believe I have more experience than anyone on here going fast with diesels (except for RIK and couple freinds on the other side of the pond) and eventhough it was years ago the principles do not change.
Everyone on here to go faster with their gas boats has to at some point increase prop speed because pitch can only do so much - the big flaw with every boat that gets talked about here is they turn the prop slower than it's equal as a gas boat does. Why do you think over 20 years ago a offshore type boat went the same speed with diesels that they do today??? Engines are lighter and more powerful, drives are better, etc, etc. What do both set-ups have in common, slow prop speeds and the fact that you still need almost equal Hp to go as fast with a diesel. 500hp of diesel does the same work as 500 hp of gas just at different rpm's. |

Ok explain it in laymans term.. Whats your expert opinion on set up for both the 43 Eliminator/Scarab/Smith and Nor-tech hulls. |
Not sure if I have mentioned before the FPT engines that Fabio Buzzi has fitted into some of his latest race boats last year and this for endurance racing, they are Fiat diesel engines of 6.72ltr and 600hp at 3100 rpm
http://www.fptpowertrain.com/eng/pdf..._Cowes_eng.pdf The P1 racer Hannes Bohinc had 2 of these units in a very ugly 39'RIB that he raced in the UK's Cowes Torquay Cowes event that turned out very rough, it was reported that the boat had 2X560HP and propped right would do 95mph http://www.britishpowerboatracingclu.../wettpunkt.jpg http://www.powerboatp1.com/news/en/533/article.aspx |
Jeff - thanks for the "expert", I would have thought someone would have keyed in on "hubristic" thought - LOL
Let me ask you questions, what gear ratio is in your current gas boat, what are the top engine rpms and the top mph? In your old diesel boat, give me the same numbers as above. Aquafun, That link has the refurbished Gancia on it with about the same Hp as the orginal small cubic inch Seateks. The gear ratios in that boat were in the .7's:1 so again it's prop speed not pitch that pushed the boat. The props on the boat were in the high 14" and 15" dia as an FYI. Let have some fun with Jeff's answers. |
The Fiat FPT diesels are Cummins 6 cilinder engines ,but they are the newer style 6,7 L like in the 2008 and up Dodge ram diesels.
I thought Buzzi had four of these in the big red V bottem with the wing . |
stirling - the picture on that link shows the 4 engines in it.
Those are probably lighter than the old SeaTeks and I would bet that the 600 hp each is a conservative number instead of the inflated 600hp in the old engines? |
