Question Garmin GPS Question...

Greetings OSO Members,

I now own a Garmin 182 GPS, it's mounted on the dash of my PQ.
This is my first GPS and I was wondering about the downloadable capabilities of this model. It uses the Garmin "Blue Chart" cards,
I was wondering if the cards are worth the investment, or is it cheaper to download the info from a cd and a labtop ?

My usage area varies, Northern WS (Lake Winnebago and Sturgeon Bay), western Lake Erie (Put-in-Bay), southern Lake Michigan and LOTO. I hate to have to buy cards for all three areas, anybody have any thoughts ????

I have the 176C and I contemplated the same things. What I ended up doing was pruchasing the pre-loaded cards because I found out that you also should get the USB writer along with the CD or it will take a LONG time to download to the unit. That along with the need to purchase blank cards to strore the BlueChart data raised the bar to the level of the pre-purchased cards (actually they were cheaper). From what the Garmin people told me, the only big reason to go for the CD is if you want to plan and track your trips on you computer in addition to the GPS.

Hope that helps.

Makes sense to me,what about the software upgrades on their website...do you have to "buy" anything to do it ????
