Blew a coupler - how to remove black tar = like stuff
Need some help:
I took out a coupler. When it did, the coupler blew black sticky tar like residue all over. How do you remove it????? I have tried Purple Power, Simple Green, acetone, citrus cleaner. . . . . The only thing that kinda works are Swipe wipes - but only if the tar-like crap is thin. The areas where there are glops, it only smears!!! So - anyone blown a coupler and had this black tar like crap everywhere? What did you use to clean it off?????? Help |
It's not tar, it's rubber. I've used acetone and hard rubbing. If it were tar gasoline would be the answer but I haven't tried that on what you have.

Bill, Try kerosene, then the other stuff you mentioned

I use laquer thinner/acetone or brake cleaner(the flammable stuff-Brakekleen in the green can). Either of these will take care of it, but it will take some elbow grease. It is a nasty job that is a big giant pain in the ass. Keep working at it and it will come off. Wear gloves and a long sleeve shirt because it is a Bit@h to get off of your skin. Good luck.

The black stuff is basically melted rubber that stuck and cooled. My first guess to remove it would have been acetone.

Start out with....
Start out with a razor blade and VERY CAREFULLY remove the thick stuff then move on to the chemicals:drink:

Just get a bunch of yellow, blue, and red paint, and splatter some of that in there. It will then be themed to match the rest of the boat. :D
|
Just use a torch, it will come off quickly:lolhit:
