Unhappy Interesting dilemma

So how many hours or seasons should one expect out of the factory merc manifolds on a BBC.

fresh water only?

Salt but flushed religously?

Salt and lazy about flushing?

Default

fresh water only, 3 seasons, stored indoors, heated warehouse.

My biggest concern is damage to motor. Will do compression check and leakdown. The worst rust was beneath cyl 3 as it is inline with opening in riser. The risers only have about 3/32" sealing area on the inside between the water ports and the exhaust port. Piss poor design IMHO.

This is reminiscent of the space shuttle's solid rocket booster "field joint" that catastrophically failed.

Looking at CMI's.

Default Oilit

Id soak that valve stem and the top of the cylinder with mystery oil to help it free up the rust..Worse than rust if you ran it with water in the cylinder you might have damaged the wrist pin or rod bearing from hydraulic lock ..Good luck
