That view of the mountains from Ponce Harbor was my view each morning I woke up on the yacht in March. Love that place

Very nicely restored and was a good choice. Not your typical Ramada Inn for sure.

Hello Bob/Jay
I can understand after a long long day on the water , wanting to just got to your Hotel and a nice shower and comfy bed.
Yes, the Ramada in Ponce is not your typical Ramada inn
I've been there before., I;ve stayed in Ponce several times over the years and always enjoyed my stay there

Hope the weather is nicer today for you
The Fire House( Parque De Bombas) is pretty neat and there are also the coffee plantation just out side the city.
There is also the Serralies(Don Q Rum) Crystal Cross and house above the City to the North. Also the Tibes (Taino Indians) Village in Ponce.
Enjoy your Stay, and be safe the remaining part of the trip .
Thank you
Jim

Bill,
I know what you mean ,, The Pearl of the South as Ponce is called is a neat place to visit and stay.
I lived in Puerto Rico for almost 3 years and loved every minute of it.

Thank you
Jim

Great pics Jay! Looks like a hellof'a way to cruise

Bill
Party Central for sure that weekend
I agree with you about the cool people there ,, all over the island
I would drive the back roads thru the sugar cane fields from San German to my place in Boqueron on the beach and find these tiny buildings made from shipping containers that were local bars and stop for a cold Medalla beer and just get talking to the folks there
It was nice time in my life.

Enjoy your trip there,, I'll be going later on during the summer for a few weeks.

Thank you
Jim

Wednesday ( I think ! )

Today we had a slow start but that was fine as we were not planning on going anywhere. After breakfast on the square downtown, Jay and I headed over to the US Customs house to complete the paperwork for arrival and also for departure tomorrow to save time. Time means nothing on these Islands. It would normally drive me nuts but I made up my mind going into the trip that I would just roll with things and not let my blood boil. Customs took almost 2 hrs which can probably be done in 20 minutes but that is just the way it is. From there it was over to Pep Boys for various types of oils. During the morning I got a call from Julian ( OSO JCG ) and said his dad ( also Julian ) had a trusted mechanic on standby for our arrival at the marina. I can't thank Julian enough for hooking us up with a great mechanic ( Luis santos ) that not only took care of our steering issues but went thru the engine compartment thoroughly and took care of a number of other items for me. Great guys and very reasonable I thought with their pricing. As well Jochii Becerra helped with topping up fluids, taking us shopping, ice, helping me plot a protected and scenic route thru the US Virgin Islands to BVI. On arrival in BVI we will clear Customs at Sopers Hole in the West End and then head over to see OSO Expat at Saba Rock Resort. I am really looking forward to the next few days in BVI.
Must run now. I am treating Jay and the Julians to a nice dinner tonight at Lola's.

Pic 1 is Jay and I having dinner this evening at Lola's in downtown Ponce, PR with Julian Sr and Jr. ( OSO JCG ) They were a great help to us today and much appreciated. They are picking us up at the hotel in the morning to take us to the marina and see us off. We will likely see them next at the BVI ( Liverick Bay ) poker run on Sunday. Should be on the water by 10 AM. Only 140 miles to Tortola so should be thee by early afternoon.

The other 2 pics are the Casino back at Ocean world marina, Puerto Plata, DR.

The guys just left for the BVI a few minutes ago. We have a pretty cloudy sky here but the seas seem to be calm. Team Predator should make the BVI in a little over 3 hours. Can't wait to read their updates and I hope me and my dad can make the trip tomorrow aswell. It was great getting to meet Bob and Jay. We had a great time last night, just sharing stories.

Hola Julian

Its great to see that you and your Dad could meet and help Bob and Jay .

Do you live in Ponce? I will be on the Island this summer

Thank you Jim

Bobthebuilder 05-27-2010 03:28 PM

Just a quick note to let all know we are settled in at the Saba Rock Resort near the east end of Virgin Gorda, BVI. We made it !! Very nice resort that is managed by OSO Expat who I made contact with during last years attempt. David was on the dock to meet us and secure the boat in the pouring rain.
For some reason Spot seems to have stopped working about 50 miles west of here. May have something to do with the torrential rain we got caught in.
I will write more later.
Bob

Good question. I thought with getting here a couple of days before the poker run I would see the sights and run with the boats going back to Puerto Rico on Monday, secure the boat and fly home. David ( OSO Expat ) has been talking some sense into me and may leave the boat here, go home for a while and return to the Islands. Will get it figured out in the next few days but I can tell you, I'm liking the BVI ! :)

Pic below is Jay and I having dinner with Daviid ( Expat ) and Christanne at David's Saba Rock Resort. They have been great hosts and the hospitality is much appreciated.

Freeryd 05-27-2010 10:12 PM

what a ride!!! just read from post #1 to the end and I WANT MORE! haha. Pix are great Jay! I'll be lookin you up this december when i return to naples for a cpl weeks! keep jammin' guys!

Expat 05-27-2010 10:35 PM

Don't let them kid you. They came through some of the worse weather I have seen here in a long time. Major squalls. No visibility. Nasty. Very few people could navigate a boat through that to a place they have never been. My hat's off to them.

We will be drinking Painkillers all weekend to that. We need an excuse.

db

thisistank 05-28-2010 02:16 AM

God, this is an AWESOME thread!!

Bob, have you thought of compiling the pics and your "memoirs", if you will, of this trip of a lifetime and thowing them all into a published book? I don't know how many people have ever done this trip in a performance/offshore powerboat but I'm sure you could count them on one hand. I think a book with pics and the tails of all you've met and things you've done would be an awesome read (as evident by this thread).

Good job hooking up with David. Cool guy and seems to run a tight ship over there!:drink:

I assume your'e down there for the poker run?

Keep up the great work...Stay safe!
