Default Merc 496 Crate Motor

Guys - I'm hoping you can give me some much needed guidance. I bought a Cobalt 360 3 weeks ago. On week two - at startup I threw a rod. Oil levels were perfect, motor has 460 hours on it. The motor is a 2003 TPI.

Last week I bought a merc crate motor (rebuild) and dropped it in. Can someone explain to me how to set the motor for startup? Do I have to worry about timing / top dead center. The crate motor was a long block with tin and a water pump.

I turned the key on - power to the fuel pump - no power to the coils. Cranks over fine, but won't start due to lack of spark. Any suggestions would be appreciated!. ..

It could be a

1/ ground problem

2/ harness or sensor unplugged somewhere.

First thing I would check is the kill switch. Both ends.
