This is a great thread. Now I know who not to sit with at Poker Run lunch stops. The cheap non-paying members, who will stiff us paying members with the bill.Or Rippem who will take all the ladies.
Merry Christmas everyone

I'm not a real fan of the corporate world anymore after Baja Marine was destroyed by one, but HEY that has been good for the business we have started now. It has been a struggle to rise from the ashes, but OSO has been a big help to maintain the effort. We pay the $500.00 a year to have our website, and email in the signature (that was a hard click to make) and we never even got a thank you from anyone. We have yet to get support from anyone at IB, or mod's telling people to support the sponsors? We do get much support from past customers that are OSO members. I guess it boils down to the fact that I am willing to pay here based ONLY on the size of the membership.

Oh, and I often think how OSO profits from my 24 years of knowledge at Baja.

Just my perspective from working for Boats.com—and continuing to work for Boats.com—since 2000: You cannot monetize a site on a "subcription" base (i.e. membership) to any significant level. (OK, maybe the porn sites do good business with that model, but that's it.)

What's more, once you have given something away it is very hard to start charging for it.

Need an example? Television. I'm not talking about cable channels, just basic network, network affiliates and local channels. It's free. If you started charging for it, people would riot in the streets. Same goes for websites. Access to most of them costs nothing.

That said, I am going to subscribe to offshoreonly.com, despite my contributions as a writer. Here's why: It's my way of showing support for the sponsors/advertisers, as well as the site itself. What OSO "sells" to the advertisers is you, the offshore/high-performance community. They can say with a straight face, "This is much traffic we can put your message in front of."

So whether you pay or not, whether you have serious information to contribute or just want to goof around, are inherently valuable to offshoreonly.

Whether you pay or not, you are valuable. My reason for ugrading today, as I said, is that it shows support for the advertisers on this site. As with magazines, advertisers, rather than members, will provide the lion's share of revenue for this site. That's just reality.

Last, for a bunch of diehard capitalists a lot of you guys sure seem to get hung up on the "corporate" label. I don't get it.

Now, if you want to bag on corporate chain restaurants, I'm with you.

No disrespect to the advertisers but has anyone ever thought of a reverse model where the members pay for the bandwidth/moderation fee's and advertisers aren't allowed? It would be a site owned by its members, sort of co-op.

Just something different to think about....

Thank You

Maybe some of the other paying members can explain why they pay when you really dont have to.

I only pay to see pictures... Most of the members I know who don't pay, usually call me up because they want to see pictures... It's still the largest offshore community out there....

I don't put much thought process into paying the bill....it's not very complicated... I am a member of other sites that are free and don't complain about having to pay here.

What ever floats your boat... If you wanna join the country club you pay the membership, if not go somewhere else.

This is the only site I pay to be on for a few reasons. Quality of information is second to none, I have met many very good people through the site, keeps me aware of what is going on locally and worldwide about the hobby/business I love and last but not least the RG thread got me to go platinum (with her performance this past year I will be going back to gold). I heard talk of a boy toy. All I can say girl is WHAT ABOUT US.

I will admit that I do look at long time non paying members as cheap freeloaders if they are constantly here asking for info and not contributing.

Same here! Plus I think it the least I could do to help out a site that is absolutely great!

Merry Christmas everyone
