To get back to topic, I don't run the chrome balls or the SS ones. They look like crap and end up with sharp spots due to wear.

I prefer the machine finish hitch balls with the 25,000 - 30,000 lbs. weight ratings. I usually run them for 3 years and replace.

Based on the size of that shank, and the notches on the side of the ball, it looks like it's one of those chrome cheap Draw-tite balls that's only rated for 6000 lbs.

Seemed to work fine. Didn't clean it or nothin!

Beyond ball hygiene, it's a good idea to keep balls dropped and on the down-low year-round, as surefire protection against someone drunk and confused -- or just for the sheer spontaneous fun of it....ramming you from the rear.
