I was a Snap-On dealer for 12 years and as was said earler here the company just nails the dealers to the wall.
They bent me over and and then broke it off and the pain still linger's and will for years to come. I was also a new dealer trainer for Matco for a short while and that didn't go well at all. That all being said, I have always liked Snap-On hand tools but for the box's I would go with Matco, you get more bang for your buck. And yes the #s are stamped on Snap-On in the upper right rear corner and after 1998 they are also inside, few people know that. If the guy selling can't come up with a payed in full ticket ask who his dealer was and contact him. If it was a contract with Sanp-On credit the dealer will get screwed believe me. If the dealer had it on a truck account he will thank you for letting him know he is about to get phucked hard. Treat the tool guy with respect because he works hard and puts alot of trust out there along with his own money every day and it can all blow up in a N.Y. min. Tim(expensive date) I am sure can answer all the questions anyone has and if you need tools let him know he's been at it awhile. |
I have Snap On, Matco and Craftsman tools in my tool box.
I have broken all 3 just as easily and had all 3 last just as long. Then again its all the same to me, I just buy entire boxes from guys getting out of the business, take what I need and resell the rest on ebay for a small profit so rarely do I ever actually pay for tools.. |

How long have you been doing the Matco gig? I have really thought about doing something like that. I checked the website and they say they have some franchise opportunities in Ohio...

RT unless you have a bunch of money you dont like i would buy a trash truck and haul garbage first

I have been on the repo end for Matco and Snapon companies, for many years, we have shut down numerous agents and it never goes easy... We have also repo'd numerous tools from the mechanics themselves, but this too can be a major PITA...
I can tell you 1 thing, most tool guys selling the tools have NO IDEA how to run a business, let alone handle the financing, understanding who to sell to, getting information up front from the "Mechanics" handling payments, collecting payments and dealing with the aftermath when things go bad. Those 2 spacific tool companies must have a great presentation on getting people signed up to sell for them, and like many of the people looking at the franchise, they only see the proposed sales potential, NOT what it takes to actually make that kind of money... Being self employed is great and very successfull for many, but it is not for everyone. My recommendation to anyone looking at getting into this field, before you start selling also take a class/seminar on collections and finance. All the agents I have seen over the years that have done very well, actually had this type of background, then went into the sales side. This is just my personal opinion, remember I only get to deal with things when they go bad, so I may be biased... |
Snap-On tools just feel better.

Just for the record, that is 2 seperate threads, now showing under me...
I stated they need to learn about business, the other poster stated they may possibly drink(?) their woes away, both statements could be accurate, you decide, I just don't want to be blamed for the wrong comment! |

Snap-On from what I hear from some of the real old timers is just about taking anyone with a heart beat and some sort of credit score. |
I think Harbor freight is good.
Good for Chit.. Been a mechanic for over 30 years,Snap on,Mac,then Matco for hand tools. Matco does make a pretty good tool box. |

Every Tool Company will warrenty/replace if you ship them to them. Yes its easier when a truck shows up or driving to sears. But you can ship them in and sometimes they will send a prepayed shipping label for you.
Problem was, I didn't have a dealer. The route we where on was "in-between" dealers and a new one was not yet hired. That is what prompted my call. Next call made to the regional office. Same bullchit story. I said the same thing you stated, "where do I send them for warranty replacement. They stated, NO WHERE. See your dealer in your area that you purchased them from. After many months, a new dealer was hired and did get the tools replaced. |

All 3 of those brands of tools are pretty nice really. I'd go with the Snap-On's given the choice, but would take a full set of any of them.
|
snap on the way to go , i been using box and tools for all most 20 years now. i do have some mac but you cant beat snap on, i think the quilty of the tools an boxes are great
|

Strange you just happen to live in the town that they are made in. |
http://tooltrucks.com/classmain.php
While some may be sold to upgrade most are from failed dealers. This is were trucks go when the dealer goes out.If you click on the company it lists all trucks available with those stickers. |
What about Kobalt from Lowes? I thought they were made by Snap On?
|
I've long quit wrenching, and after seeing today's pricing on tools I'm damn glad I bought back in the 1970's and early 80's- I feel sorry for those having to buy today, and used but nice would be a strong recommendation.
My collection is almost all Snap-On, although many tools here at home, the farm, and the cabins up north are a hodgepodge of Sears and Mac/Matco. Snap-On always had the highest quality, IMHO.... I never gave much look at big boxes- they were worthless in aircraft hangars (although it was always fun watching new hotshots show up with them). The smaller, lower, and more mobile, the better; few will go under a jet's wings. They're pretty, but bump one of those big hogs into some guy's 45 million dollar aircraft and see how much he likes your box. |

Best tools in the world ain't no good if they are broken and you can't get it replaced, holding you up. Haven't been in the field for over 25 yrs, which has left me every Snap-On rachets broken, or at least just the guts with stripped teeth. Their wrenches and sockets held up fine, except for the sockets that double as u-joint removal tools. ;) They just don't seem to work so well after being beaten on. Actually when I have to grind, weld or modify a socket for a special occasion, I use my Snap-On's since I consider them disposable.
With Sears just a couple miles away and open 7 days a week, now I just buy Craftsman and they work just as well for me. For the 10x cheaper cost of Craftsman over Snap-On, I'll deal with the occasional broken tool every few yrs or so and drive to Sears to replace it. Leaves more money for boat stuff. Once was a 3/8" drive 11/16" , now it's a 1/4" drive 9/16" :lolhit: |

i have been doing business with my Matco deal for over 20 years here in Charlotte NC. do you know him , his name is Cecil Long. He is very good , has a well stocked truck is is there every week. I like snap on but everything they have is not the best , i buy from all of them depending on price availability and quality. The tool business is 100 % about service, without it they are all junk.

Some of it maybe ends up there, usually when a guy goes out there is not much left. They will take back some stuff but a lot they won't.Also some of the guys that have loans won't send back as any credit goes against the loan. They will usually try to sell cheap for cash the last couple of weeks.

Didn't worry about the price then, just made the weekly payment when the toolman stopped. Should have them paid off in another 25. :lolhit: |
A lot of Snap-On stuff shows up at our flea market. Those boxes are unreal.
