FYI - Ford Discontinues Excursion

Just got back from the local Ford dealer and they tell me that the Excursion has been discontinued due to poor sales.

I hate to hear this because it is one of the best all around vehicles I have ever owned.

If you have ever considered one, better get it before they are gone.

Guess I had better make mine last, I doubt anyone will make one that big again.

boot 06-04-2002 09:18 PM

WOW ,that sucks ! I'll have to ask my guy about that tomorrow ! For the first time ever ,I just today considered buying an SUV and it would ONLY be the BIG "X" ! HOpe it's not true .........

rainmn 06-04-2002 09:43 PM

Mine's leased - I guess I'll be buying it out when it's up. If they were still producing them at that time, I'd have no second thoughts about getting another one.

I heard that rumor last december.. Makes no sense that they keep adding some many different upgrade trim levels. This the
second i have owned... there GREAT!!!
2002 PSD 4x4 No Bounderies Ultimate Limited

Coddigtion 06-04-2002 09:50 PM

Thank good ness I saw this. I was getting ready to make a move on one. I think that I am going to have to stay with the suburban now.

jafo 06-04-2002 11:00 PM

I may have to update my 2K to 2002 before they do this- how unfortunate for them to discontinue! After Suburbans, F250's, & F350's, I think this is the ultimate vehicle!

Nice Ultimate PPRace! Do they offer that in white as well? I saw one like yours in Pompano at the dealership when I was picking up my AT in April, it was 4X2 though. Beautiful truck!

puder 06-05-2002 01:18 AM

i am kind of glad they are discontinuing that thing!!! (sorry guys) to many housewives (self proclaimed "queens of the road") around where i live have them and just can't drive them. A few days ago i watched soemone try to park one. I had just gotten mylunch at teh deli and was in my car i was abotu to drive off when i noticed them. Ni joke it took 10 minutes and she must have backed up and pulled forward 15 times. Best off when she finally "parked it" she was 3 feet from the curb.

can you say "require a CDL"

Also that "car" is NOT a daily driver. If you have farm or a construction site and tools you need to move aroudn fine. If you have a boat to haul or a race car fine. But when it's used only for going to starbucks and PTA meetings that is just a waste of gas. A normal sized vehichle will do.

We don't have to use all the oil in Alaska. We just need to drill so it's there IF and when we need it. I tow wrecked cars everyday and if you VALUE your family you better get them out of those little sh&t boxs they call cars. We own 2 Suburbans and we wouldn't settle for anything less. We know 2 famiies that have lost a small child in a accident because they were driving a small car:( And in the 25 years of driving, both of these trucks get more MPG than anything else I have ever owned in the past. I'm sure it's a sad day for the Ford fans.

Safety has to be a big priority when hauling the family around. Plus, it never hurts to have an extra vehicle around thats capable of hauling the boat. I'll stick with the big vehicles thank you... Just got rid of the Suburban and down graded to a Yukon :D

CigDaze 06-05-2002 08:44 AM

That would suck!

I would hate to see it go, just because it's cool looking and can actually perform heavy-duty tasks while being somewhat reserved.

However...The Minivan / SD Truck combo aspect of it probably isn't that big of a market and it seems to be a compromise of both worlds. One could just as easily get their old lady a minivan for soccer practice or a SD 'Truck' for those hauling and HD tasks.

I'm sorry, there are just way too many housewives driving around 4-ton vehicles, consuming 9mpg worth of fuel just to go pick up some groceries while mauling every other vehicle within reach and causing a pile-up of other cars waiting for the beast to fit into the parking spaces after the 12th attempt.

I've never seen one more than a few weeks old without some kind of scratches or scuff marks at the grocery store...Think of all the other cars out there that have matching war wounds.

Hey catman...Are you with us or against us?:p ;) :D

Should just all be good humans and put a bullet in our heads so that the dung beatles in ANWR can live an hour longer.

Jes&%S Chr&*st! We drive the most inefficent vehicles on earth (boats) for pure pleasure! (at least those of us here that HAVE a boat) I guess we should make up for it by towing them with our children's bigwheel.

How the hell can that make sense?

I'm a chevy guy but I would still hate to see the "X" go away!! When it comes to towing something large and room from the family I would think it would be the only way to go!! Until Chevy has the duramax in the Suburban. But still the chevy isn't as heavy duty as the Ford.

A 3/4 Ton 4x4 with a Powerstroke would be awsome!! I have been trying to talk the wife into one!! But, then she would be one of those chick's at Wal-Mart that take 15min. to park like Puder said!! But at least no one would get in her way!!

Chris288 06-05-2002 09:22 AM

Hey, wouldn't that " BIG WHEEL " be alittle unstable..

Why not get one of those little mini kiddie electric big foot trucks, it would probably be a little more stable than the 3 wheeled big wheel.. just a thought ;);) :D:D

The commercials are for the new and improved Expedition.

The local dealer had one of the new ones in stock. He says Ford decided to improve and make the Expedition larger and do away with the Excursion. The bean counters are at work here! It is a bottom line thing. I think if more women actually liked the BIG Excursion like my wife does, it would be the hottest seller out there. But being longer and taller than the Chevy Sub the women usually do not like them according to the dealer.

I may check out the deals and get another on myself with the powerstroke.

Yeah Baby.

jr 06-05-2002 09:54 AM

Puder, tell that to my wife. She would probably rip you a new one.;) Alot of the women drive them because there aren't too many SUV's that have enough room to do what they need. Mini vans arent cool, never were, and never will be. An Expedition is too small to haul kids, and other stuff. Not to mention my boat. That was the best all around vehicle ever done. If people have problems parking them, its because their dumb asses. The thing drives just like my F-150 extended cab. Which was her's before the X.

If anyone was to look around there are more than you might think. Police, and fire departments love them. They tow alot and you can take stuff with you too, and not have to strap it to the roof. I think the real reason that they are going away is that Bill Jr. is getting pressure from his enviromental friends because of the "poor" milage. In their eyes anyway. My PSD gets better milage than my F-150 5.4L.

Gotta love special interest groups.

SummerObsession 06-05-2002 10:46 AM

OK, here's a ? then....

What is the verdict?
I am trying to find the "perfect" new vehicle. They don't make one.
What makes my decision difficlut is this: We have four small children, haul a 5000+ lb boat, and want to do it all in comfort and style. Gee, I don't want much, do I?
What about the Navigator? Do they haul much?
I have a '02 GMC Denali that does a pretty good job right now, but this is a second vehicle.

FunHome 06-05-2002 11:03 AM

Man, They are really going to have to do a lot to the Expedition for it to be anything like the "Big X" The one I rode in made me car sick in about 3 min.!!! Also they have to short of a wheelbase to be a great towing vehicle. They are kinda like a 4 Door Tahoe or the 4 door Yukon, and I really don't care for the way they ride either, I guess I'm just use to the longer wheelbase of the Suburban, (Yukon XL)

jr 06-05-2002 11:08 AM

I've got 3 kids. 7,4,and 3. After having them in the F150 which was the main family vehicle I would never, NEVER have a vehicle that didnt have the third row. EVER. After countless hours of "He's touching me!!!" I would gladly throw down 40 grand for the X. With our lifestyle, some traveling, boat towing, grocery getting with kids, the X was the perfect vehicle. We can go somewhere, separate the kids, tow the boat, and still have room for all the stuff we need. I like the Navigator but as a daily vehicle never. If you go shopping for the family you have to pile the groceries on the back seat because there isn't enough room behind it. Then the kids are back sitting together and fighting. Okay then pull out the back seat. Tell your wife that when you forget to do it for her the night before. Then where do you put it.

In my opinion the Nav is a good weekender for a family of 4. More than that you will always have the back seat in, and everything will go on the roof. I have the PSD 4x4. It tows well, has room for 2 adults and 4 kids all with one seat of space between them, much heavier duty and longer lasting than the Nav. But it does not ride nearly as well with out mods to the suspenion. I would never trade it. The room behind the back seat was the most important factor in our purchase, towing 2nd, ride 3rd. Getem while you can.

HavasuCat 06-05-2002 11:17 AM

My girlfriend used to drive an Acura, and not only could I not stand to ride in the thing because it was so small, but I feared for her safety should she get into an accident. I have seen to many accidents where the small vehicle loses. I tryed to get her an Excursion but she was to small to drive the thing (5' tall). We ended up getting her a Suburban which is the next best thing. She loves it and I feel better about her driving something safe.

As far as gas mielage is concerned...An Excursion with a PSD will get at least 15, and maybe a little better if speeds are kept down. Not bad for a vehicle of it's size. I got 13.5 towing a 42 tiger in my new F-350 with a PSD.

puder 06-05-2002 11:37 AM

my major qualm is with people that buy them and dont; haul anything or have a need for a tank of a truck. And where i live that is the case.

Additionally people being kille din elittel cars. I drivea very litle car. And it is safer than most out there. Hell its a 2 seater with 4 airbags. I could drive head first into a tree and probaly survive. But if oen of those suburbans or expedition slammed into me it woudl be over with. Not becasue my car isn't safe but becasue those thigns are just massive.

I think people could drive more smaller and mid sized cars and be safer if there were less huge tanks out there.

If you need to drive it that is fine. Ijust think you shodul be ABLE to drive one. Hence requiring a special liscense. I ride a motorcycle and they require a special liscense for that.

dockrocker 06-05-2002 11:49 AM

FWIW, I haven't been able to find anything about Ford discontinuing the X on any of these Ford or auto industry related websites:

www.blueovalnews.com
www.f150online.com
www.fordexcursions.com
www.ford-diesel.com

The only thing I've seen is the plans to put the new 6.0 diesel and 5 spd auto in the X for the 2003 model year. Sounds like the dealer has rumoritis...

Frequency 06-05-2002 12:13 PM

The sales manager at my dealership told me sales were improving, he heard nothing about Ford dropping the Excursion.

Two years ago at an intersection, someone pulled out DIRECTLY in front of us as we were traveling through at about 45 mph. We forced the doors open and walked away from our E150 conversion van with a few scratches and air bag burns. The next day my wife told me to trade in the Ranger pickup. I showed her an F150. She said "Not big enough", hence my F250.

The accident demonstrated for me that the best defensive driving skills won't help you avoid every potential problem. I don't want my family to die from another drivers mistake. My new thinking - if your're going to put yourself right in front of me for no explainable reason - I'm going to win.

SummerObsession 06-05-2002 12:17 PM

jr: Thanks for the info! I have to agree with you about the 3rd row seat thing. We curently actually have two Denali XL's, and really love them! My biggest problem with the X is the ride. I would be very interested in suspension mods to help with the ride. Also, as aked above, do they make the "No boundaries unlimited" in white? Also, is a tv/dvd player an option? I guess I need to go to my dealer, but sometimes they don't really know much:rolleyes: .

Designie 06-05-2002 12:36 PM

This argument about safety doesn't have much to do with anything. It's America, you're free to buy whatever you want. It's OK to say you want it because it's BIG and it's cool. But to safe they're safe is a little far fetched. Every morning driving down I-696 in Detroit, and I mean EVERY morning, I hear the same thing on the radio: "Rollover accident on I-696 and so and so..." What kind of vehicle do you think rolled over? Until people learn how to really drive instead of strapping themselves in a tank and saying "It's safer", the point is mute.
I'm taking delivery of my General Dynamics M1A1 next week, I hear it earned 5 stars in the crash tests....:D

jr 06-05-2002 01:52 PM

Summer..., the suspenion mods I was talking about are different springs, shocks, and a sway bar on the rear. The first problem is that the thing is under sprung. The front continually bounces off the bump stops because there is only about 3/4 to an inch of clearance. These are rubber bumpers that keep the axle from smacking into the frame or anything important. After awhile the springs natually sag and you get close to riding on the stops. Ford won't replace springs unless there is over 3/4" of sag. Then they just re-arch the springs. Putting different springs on it which raises the front end away from the stops gives more suspenion travel it also levels the truck. Then the better shocks control it. And the sway bar on the rear keeps the ass end from swaying around. Some that tow add airbags to the rear to compensate for the sag from the trailer and level the truck back out.

Go to ford-diesel.com and under the PSD Excursion board there is alot of info on what to do and with what parts. But a word of caution, I talked to the dealer about it an it would void my 3/36 warranty and make it 12/12 for the bumper to bumper. So I'll wait. All these things should have been done by Ford from day one.

Designie, looks like we have another Michigan boy, welcome.

In a vehicle on vehicle accident, which is more likely than a roll over, they are much safer than a smaller car.

Just a little off subject here, but Chris isn't it time you got used to calling her your "fiancee"? I know it took me three monthes after buying the ring to get used to it. ;)
I agree completely though, when Patricia met she had a Volvo and I hated it. We got her that full size Blazer in 94 and she still loves it.
13.5 towing that Tiger? that is awesome I love my V-10 but mileage like that it hard to argue with.

huh

i've heard this rumor for months now and its hogwash...they plan on building them until at least 2005. a friend of mine has a contract to build x parts for ford until then.

they can have my PSD when they pry it from my cold dead hands:D

this just sounds like a bunch of surburban owners full of hope!

We love our X Limited 4x2.

Pulls boats and trailers all over the country. Plenty of juice on the ramps.

Stay out of the throttle and the PSD gets 18-20.

Always loaded with plenty of people and stuff for the weekends at the lake house.

Wife drives it any chance she can and lets the sports car sit in the garage. Safety factor and she can take everybody to lunch!

Now why is it that every time I start talking trucks with a Suburban owner, I find myself defending my purchase? Could it be just a bit of envy?

Alaskan oil??? If you check all the oil rigs in Alaska you'll find they're all aimed toward Iraq:D

jr 06-05-2002 09:27 PM

Hey, I hear ya. I like vans, real vans not those mini things. But my wife would never go for it. Not cool enough for her. I do have to kind of agree. I wish I had a picture of my X plowing through a mud bog at my buddies house with the PSD roaring and mud flying that is the ultimate in cool. I wish I had a picture of the looks on my buddies faces when I went through the mud. I thought they were going to have to clean out thier shorts. The fronts I mean. They said the sound of that diesel was incredible. A van even and E-350 with the PSD can't match that.

I brought a van home from work one day. While taking one of the kids to a game my wife hid her head in shame. Shes a transplanted country girl, so vans don't figure into the equation.

Reindl Powerboats 06-05-2002 09:50 PM

We like ours, it is the best of both worlds and it is a big D.

powerqrudy 06-05-2002 09:52 PM

I hear ya.. these vehicles are not at their greatest when driven in the city and used for parrell parking. But this is America and if we can afford it.. we can have it. The X with a diesel is much more fuel effiecent than the wood grained 1979 caprice station.. wagon.. family.. truckster with a smoghog 350.. that towing got 8 miles to the gallon !!! Saftey is a large factor...getting hit by these SUV's in a car.... the result is poor but a GRAVEL TRAIN is worse!!!!!

Gearhead99 06-05-2002 10:23 PM

Haven't heard anything about the Excursion being dropped. But they have dropped the Blackwood pickup. Shame, nice looking truck too.

CB 06-06-2002 11:12 AM

the Excursion is not being discontinued - '03 order guides have the truck in there !!!!!!!
