I would say that the LS engines are just not worth switching too for Merc since what they have has worked. If they were not working on something else, I think you would have already seen a Merc/GM LS Marine engine.
Look at the long block they engineered for the 1350. You can't tell me that after creating that monster that they are going to look at moving to LS engines.
I know from somone involved in Merc "black" engines, that the BBC pushrod engines are going away. If they weren't, it wouldn't be so hard to find new 7.4/8.2 blocks. Even Volvo is looking at options for 8.2 replacements with large contract builders.
Stay tuned...

Hard to compare an LS to that. But if you want 500hp in a light/small package, than an LS is a great option. And dirt cheap if you don't have to pay someone to do all the work.

The 1350 is a great motor, until you consider they started with a clean slate and and only came up with 1350hp, and ask $200,000 for it.

There are some great builders out there building 1300HP engines with big whipples and PSI's, but we all know that they aren't living that long.
Back on subject, if the LS engines had a place in the 500-600HP Market, Merc would be on it. Right now, why replace the 525 with another pushrod V-8 that isnt proven in Marine applications. The demand for the LS engines will likely keep them in the aftermarket industry.

Come On. They only came up with 1350 HP that they can offer a warranty on and claim unmatched service intervals.

I don't disagree that the LS engines are cool for some applications, just don't expect to see anyone trying to appeal to OEM's jumping on the bandwagon.

ILMOR is an OEM and they are planning to release a 550HP version without catalytic converters for the sport boat market in mid-2012. This may get Merc's attention.
