??? I don't get this at all...

That's like saying if there are three engine options in a new boat, 5.0, 5.7, and a 6.2l, the guys that pays for the 6.2l is, well what you described (and I'm not really sure what you described).

But, to each their own I suppose. Not everyone wants to brag about their boat or show it off, just upgrade it a bit.

Next best is to find a good used 5.7GXI setup.

I think I'll take the advice given here and keep the plans simple.

So.... anyone care to help me find a used 5.7GXI? I don't mind doing a rebuild. The 5.7 bolts up the manifolds I have today, correct?
I bought a very low hour 5.7GXi a few years ago from a guy that got Volvo test engines. I will see if I can find his contact info.

Don't bother with an upgraded 5.0; you won't notice what 20-30 horsepower will do. Any "complete takeout" will include manifolds. Chances are your manifolds will work on 5.7; they are both smallblocks. To make sure, you could log on to Volvo Penta's web site and search through the online parts catalogs.
