Your mail brings back memories of when I was building my boat I started with an "all white boat"- so I could repair scratches and dings perfectly everytime.....
Forget about the "feet" look at the way the upper mold is finished on my boat.
IF you look at the detail on the rail of my boat if a ladder that hangs over the edge ends up without a towel there would be significant work to repair a scratch like that.

You could probably take foam float tubes and cut them to fit around the hooks, to prevent any scratches, and to make a pure white trash solution, wrap the foam tubes in duct tape!
I'll wait for Dave's T&E on the platform and if it works out well, I'll go with that.
