Our boat is Coast Guard documented and as such we do not display state registration numbers. BUT, the boat must be registered and display the New York rigistration sticker. In about 13 years, we have been stopped a grand total of twice becuase of not having registration numbers displayed. Showed the CG documentation, a few minutes of pleasant chit-chat, and we were on our way.

And oh yeh, New York wanted their sales tax first, registration second!

I bought my Outlaw about 2 1/2 years ago from a private party in Kentucky well below market value and bought my Islander from a dealer at LOTO this past December. I've been watching my mailbox since this was posted and haven't received anything. Yes, I was truthful about the sales price when I paid the taxes.

I use a small title business that's local to do all my title, tax, and registration paperwork. Are you guys using a title business also or doing it yourself?

I got audited at the beginning of the year too. I called the auditor and spoke to her. She said the NADA value of the boat I bought was above what I paid. Thus they needed me to either verify the amount I paid or validate the condition of the boat. This could be done in one of two ways:

1) proof of the payment you made to the seller to verify that you really paid the sale price you listed on the forms

2) or you must demonstrate that the condition of the boat you purchased was 'below average'.

I got the lady's email address and sent her scans of the ridiculous list of receipts I have to prove the boat I bought was a POS. Two weeks later I got a letter verifying they were closing the audit. It was pretty straight forward for me. The lady was actually very nice and helpful. Took me a few times of calling for her to actually answer the phone though. I left her a few messages, but never got anything back from those.

Does the law state use tax is to be calculated based on NADA? If not and the sale was an arm's length transaction with an unrelated party, I don't see how they have a case.

I think they ask for the proof of payment to verify that what you listed on the form as the price paid is in fact what you paid and that you didn't lie. If you can prove that you paid what you paid, the auditor told me that would satisfy their request of me.

Beginning July 1st, the State of Illinois will begin using the speed cameras in areas designated as "Work Zones" on major highways/tollways. Anyone caught by these devices will be mailed a $375.00 ticket for the FIRST offense. The SECOND offense will cost $1000.00 and comes with a 90-Day suspension. Drivers will also receive demerit points against their license, which allow insurance companies to raise Insurance rates.
This is the harshest penalty structure ever set for a governmental unit involving PHOTO speed enforcement. The State already has two camera vans on line issuing tickets 24/7 in work zones with speed limits lowered to 45 MPH. Photos of both the Driver's face and License plate are taken.

So glad I live in the part of the state that doesn't exist to Springfield and Chicago(politicians not people). Indiana is right next door and I work there and plan on moving there in the short future.

Thanks to IL laws, my boat got licensed and titled in IN since they were easier to work with on the trailer. It may cost more but the headache wasn't worth.

Plus it helps since 99% of my boating is done on the Ohio river in IN.

What is the benefit to having your boat registered with the USCG instead of the local DNR?

In IL you still need to register with the state, and display the fugly sticker with the outline of the state of illinois on the rear of your boat next to the USCG doc'd Name and port of call. You don't need to display IL reg letters on the side of the hull though.

IL doesn't use a points system for drivers licenses so I'm not sure how that will work...
