OK...here's some additional info from the "Flat Glass Formul" thread I stated earlier this year.
Thank you guys for all of the kind replies. I love the boat - and it's going to be hard to see go.
That said, it's been a great, trouble free ride for me and will make someone a wonderful 272 and very inexpensive compared to other 27's on the market with comparable power.
In response to the top end, I have rarely run it out but it will run around 70 with some chop on 91 pump gas. The vast majority of the time on the engines has been between 2600 and 2750 - getting around 2mpg! I love small blocks. I'd be happy to share ideas / compare notes if anyone is repowering to SBC's or alpha SS's.

His motors were 350 LT-1's on Alpha SS shorty drives running 70 MPH.



As I said...my 86 272 with these drives and 320 EFI's running 23" Cleavers saw 75. I think 850 horsepower in this hull could produce 80 with the right set up.

Maybe you guys are on to something! Every big block 272/292 I saw or read about wasn't coming close to 75 with 400-420hp. But proof is in the numbers good luck guys! (btw Diego I could never replace big blocks with small blocks, just seems wrong lol)

It's all about room between them lilred. Lol. I looked at big block boats and am glad I ventured away.

As to why move from a set of big blocks to small blocks it can be a step down or a huge step up - all depending. A set of all iron 320 bbc's replaced with 450-500HP half aluminum sbc's can be a dazzling upgrade, from a performance standpoint as well as offer substantially easier access to the mills.
A newer small block with variable cam timing will lay away many a big block.
Im curious to see the interiors of these Formula boats.
I would think you should get more than 70 from 850 ponies, but it seems not.

I know ,I love how this 272 runs with the 454's , but I need to finish my 383's and then I will make a decision, we'll see ...
