do you need insurance on a boat in most states or provinces? I was under the impression you did not need insurance, stupid to not have insurance? probably, but in PA anyway, it is not needed, I think in a lot of states it is not.
the original post you quoted did not mention insurance at all, rather a boater safety course, same here in PA, everyone needs it for a jetski, or anyone born after 1982 (I think), but someone not fitting that, could go buy a 200 mph boat and off they go. not using or implying this as an example of anyone, just stating a fact. Now I had to take a "Performance Boat Driving Course". Much different than a boaters safety course and much more expensive. I had to do that as I was a first time cat owner. I had owned 100+ mph V-Hulls for 4-5 years but when I wanted a cat to get insurance at all for those speeds I was required by the only two companies who write "fast cat" insurance for 100+ mph catamarans. I know it has been stated different above but it is my understanding that there isn't anyone who will insure a boat like mine without the course or a couple years documented experience, and furthermore they probably shouldn't. I thought I knew what was up with driving fast in a boat... I was only about half right and could have potentially been a liability out there on the water without the Tres Martin course. Did I learn a ton, no, but I learned when the boat was telling me it didn't like something and where the potential danger times were so that was well worth the price of the course itself. |
Are we going to fast NOW? Nope! Only cause there's no one telling so. Give it a few more years and you can bet your a$$ someone will. These "isolated" incidents while tragic, are not going to be reason we will be told to slow down. It will happen, and then all bets are off. Look in the technical section of this forum. Just about every other thread has to do with "I want more power to make my boat go faster". The limit of our speed right now comes down to the pennies in our pockets. These guys that have the pennies are the ones who most of us look up to, aspire to be. Only when the sh@# hits the fan do we lessen our admiration. Like was said here before, accidents happen. And when these accidents are publicized and witnessed by thousands of spectators (and LEOs) our "protectors" the gov start looking a little harder. Don't think they are not looking anyways though, accidents or not, limits are coming. Happy and safe boating to all.

Perhaps another perspective on this whole thing is that big, fast boats are probably best wrung out on large, lightly travelled waterways, and also perhaps not at the same time other adrenaline and testosterone junkies are doing the same.
When a large number of boats get together for a run, coordination and safety must become paramount. There are typically a lot of people in the boats just along for the ride, and perhaps not even aware of the potential dangers. Furthermore, as a sport, when we get together en masse, and attract a lot of attention, thats the worst time for something to go wrong. That's why the Harley riders get police escorts for their land-based poker runs. So, I say if you want to race, go enter sanctioned races. If you want to go test, take the proper precautions and go for broke somewhere safe. Similarily if you have a score to settle over whose rig is faster, do that out of sight too. At the poker runs, just make the run and enjoy the day, because in the eyes of the public and the lawmakers, its a parade. Be smart so we get to keep the right to act stupid when prudent. It shouldn't be the boat telling you you're going too fast. |

Thanks guys. I've had the privilege to operate this nation's finest and deadliest marine hardware (qualified OOD on a Los Angeles class attack sub). I know firsthand the level of controls and un-fun that the government can place on things when it's attention is piqued.

Ultra-high speed boats have no place in Poker Runs. Some of the owner-drivers don't have the common sense to operate them and catastrophic crashes are and will be the result. What this will mean to the general boating public is no more Poker runs because of the inability to obtain insurance and skyrocketing insurance costs for the rest of us.

I used the word idiot in an earlier post in regards to the ones blaming the cruiser for the My Way accident. I misspoke and should have used the word "wrong". The cruiser had more rights out there than any of the poker run guys being that it apparently was not a controlled event.
The point I think you are trying to make is the cruiser was just minding their own business as they went boating. But like the XXXMPH boat being responsible for their actions, so are the cruisers needing to be responsible for theirs as well. Open water ships on inland waterways do their fair share of tearing crAAp in the form of docks, fiberglass, passenger ejection and falls within a boat. Why should an entire lake/inland water way come to a halt because some open water vessel is traveling at open water speeds with an open water wake on their way to get lunch? All I am saying is just like the XXXMPH boat, the large vessels have an equal responsibility for their actions. |

Any speed or size boat can be dangerous when the driver and equipment are pushed beyond their limits . Just saying , the fun stops if someone gets hurt . As driver's we are responsible for the comfort and safety of our passengers first . I have found through the years that , alot of people were not as happy going fast as they expected to be . As for not allowing high speed boats in poker runs LMAO

i like to watch the big boys run and its exciting to see boats 5 wide crackin 150 mph down the lkae...but in all honesty if some measures of safetey/restraint arent taken by us...the boaters.....before innocent bystanders, non participants, and on lookers are injured or killed....then the measures will be enforced upon us by authorities.
its a sad but inevitable outcome if things continue to progress the way they have. its a matter of time. just think if there had been a couple more boats full of families behind My Way when the lost control.....that could spell the end of poker runs all together. im not bashing anyones skill or intentions...but travelling at 150+ mph on public water ways in tandem with scads of other weekend warriors is dangerous. and even the most skilled and experienced boaters make mistakes. i love poker runs and i just dont want the fun and good times to be marred by tragedy. |
