I'm thinking of financing a new-to-me Donzi and I went through BoatUS for pre-qualifying ( the still looking stage ) and they sent me back the approval email, but said the charge for USCG Documention is $500.00, which they will take care of for me.

I dont remember the cost being that high when I documented my 35 Cig in 1995 . . am I getting old and have just forgotten this, or are they padding the cost a little ? If it matters, the Donzi IS already documented as well.

That's pretty high. I paid $95. I have search the net before and found all the paperwork and instructions to do it your self. The fees and listed too. try www.uscg.mil/hq/g-m/vdoc/nvdc.htm

I thought it sounded a little out of whack. When you paid the $95.00 for yours, did you have another agency do it for that cost, or was that the do-it-yourself cost ?

I did it myself, and it was easy. The coasties were even helpful on the phone. It was so easy, I'm not sure why people hire this done.

As it is already documented, you don't re-document it. You just "transfer" the information into your own name. May cost the same small fee, though.

I went to the website that Gig provided, and as you guys have pointed out, it looks like the average Joe can document one himself, which I didnt realize.

hmm . . . and here I thought that I would be safe at BoatUS from any type of overcharging / gouging . . . I wouldnt mind if it had been marked up SOME, just for the sake of convienence, but 300 + dollars is too much.

The local bank that financed my new 36 insisted that they be the one to document it.

They used Boat US and the charge was $395.00.

I had already talked to Hampton Roads Documentation before the bank told be they had to do it, and the charge was going to be $375.00.

If is worth it, $500.00 is a little high.

hmm . . . I wonder now if BoatUS will insist that they be the one to document it too . . I guess I will bring to their attention that

A) Documentation can be done by an individual

B) Outside agencies dont charge $500.00 for this same service

C) That other people that have gone through BoatUS have not paid $500.00 for documentation, and to break down the exact charges for the $500.00 so that we can compare them to what I have pulled off of the USCG website.

Wonder if they will suddenly "reconsider" the amount they want to charge me

My finance company charged $350-ish for the Fountain. Don't remember the exact number, but no way it was $500.

The $95 I paid was the fee my finance place charged after I showed them the real rates and refussed to pay the BS fees they wanted. Good luck

Go to this site and get the straight skinny. Get the number and call them. They (USCG) charge a flat $133 for first time documentations. That's what I and others nearby paid to document ours recently...
