Default Pro charger for 502 mpi

Have a '96 Scarab with stock 502 MPI Bravo 1 drive that i am considering to add a "pro Charger" to it. Has anyone dealt with this and any feed back the effects this may cause to the stcok drive train I am running.

Thanks for the insight.

I would be more worried about the stock head gaskets on your 502's........

Thank you for the warning. Is there a specific head gasket you recommend? Is this the only concern I should have?

I ran one for several years on a stock 7.4 with 9 pounds of boost. I did burn a valve once running low on fuel. I twisted a prop shaft off once also which also caused me to loose the prop. The key is getting it set up correctly. Mine was a carb motor and I had to upgrade fuel lines and fuel pump.

What boat was this on? I'm looking at a Scarab out of KC area currently.

KCHOTBOAT,

At 9 lbs boost, that is fairly high...from what i have been reading, on stock 502MPI motor it is best not to exceed 3 to 5 lbs boost...and you can be safe with that. Would you agree with this?

Safe is 3 to 5, and by safe most mean nearly the same rebuild time as stock. However, 5 lbs of boost in the world outside of boating is nothing. Sounds like he ran higher as a gamble and turned out ok, which is fine if a burn down wont ruin your whole summer, if it will stick with 3 lbs

I would not run any kind of super charger without a cam swap, spring change, new valve seats and inconel exhaust valves, MLS head gaskets. While you in there go ahead and stud the heads.

Throwing a super charger on is the easiest thing to do, tuning after is the hard part. I would suggest talking to a few of the pros and see what's out there for a proven set up.

Do it right and have the ECU tuned on the dyno (must be mefi3 or newer). The boost referenced regulator in their kit is sketchy at best. Just did one over the summer for a customer with tuning done at Crockett's. Where are you located?
