From what I've noticed the piles are only to seal off the openings in the dunes which allow access to the beaches. I may be wrong though.

Most of the time the piles of sand are to stop the waves from coming through. The water still comes through but the man-made piles tend to stop the waves. That is until the waves wash that sand away.

My sister lives on the Mullica River in southern nj. She evacuated yesterday and my brother-inlaw evacuated earlier this afternoon when water took over the house.

Things are bad here in AC. We had 4 feet of water in the shop. Very bad, finally decided I cant do any more and we went home. The rest is going to happen and I have to make sure the wife and kids are ok.

Watching weather channel,, all that snow has mejonsing to go snowmobiling, That is going to reek havoc on that area also as they still have leaves down there I suspect the mountains will not have power for a while as our Oct storm did 6 years ago

Unfortunately I have more experience with hurricanes than I care to living in New Orleans and from what I know that looks like a big waste of time! Sand isn't going to hold back any sort of tidal surge what so ever, whoever lives within a few blocks of the beach will be shoveling sand on top of the rest of the clean-up they will have to do with their homes
