Boat graphics
I have a 1997 Baja 252 and would like a change in the graphics. Just too many like mine around. Anyone know of a good painter/gelcoater in the Cincinnati Oh area.

sign4boat is right . . you definetly want someone expierianced with boats . . .i did this one in march, i dont have any openings till about mid winter though. . . let me know if i can be of any help.  there is alot of talent on this board, i'm sure you will find exactly what you want. by the way did you have any specific . . .colors, styles, etc. . .
  |
sign4boat, the owner had several months of work in it before i came in to spray it. i coached him along the way to make sure it was prepped properly, luckely he had previous expieriance an did a great job. the actual paint work took about ten or twelve days, on big boats like this i have to split the job into front deck, rear deck and left an right side ( i mean port and starboard  ) on the day that i did the deck i sprayed and taped for 24 hours straight. started at 9:00AM got done at 9:00 AM the next day, man what a long day that was but i had a blast. with these base coat colors that i use they have to be cleared within 24 hours so that means your on a time limit as soon as you lay your first base. there are ways to extend that time frame but i prefer not to. i just bite the bullet and crank out the grafic. the extra added pressure does wonders for creativity  :D :D thanks for the complement

Has anyone had any experiences with Raceline Graphics ??
www.racelinedigital.com |
Haven't used Raceline yet
but were going to for a boat to use in Movie/TV Work. With all the different designs we can use one all white boat and just change grafics. Mike J. www.cinemarentals.com |

WOW, how many of you knew Mitcher T was on this board? I cannot count how many beautiful boats, a lot of them Sunsations, that I would kill to have the paint work on!!! I feel honored.
|
Absolutely fantastic paint work. Man I would kill for one of them
|
Mitcher-I got to see that Firecracker boat that you did over the weekend. Never seen it before, but I knew it was yours immediatly. That was one good looking boat. Tastful, not over done like so many are.
|
Wow, Thanks guys, you made my heart smile.
If you get a chance, I just added about 125 photos to my website, a collage of a variety of stuff, check it out and let me know what you think. It's supposed to be done in the next 48 hours or so. I check into OSO all the time, I'm just the quiet type (yeah right). www.mitchertcustompainting.com In the meantime, if you have any questions, feel free to let me know, I'll do what I can to help you out. I saw the Tiger paint job you did the weekend of Smoke on the Water. He was idleing out of South Haven. Unbelievable !
|
I have to get some better pics of that one. Dave (the Owner) was supposed to bring it up to me for some minor repairs, but haven't seen it yet. If you got a pic of it, I'd like to see it.

Sorry, no pic.

Dave's been too busy using that Profile! He's out almost everytime we go out and they go out a lot of weeknights.
Dave lives down a subdivision we own a rental near, and he used to wave at us when we took our 25' Baja by when we lived there. Then, after a year or so (we moved by then) and were driving to the rental, and here was his new boat in the driveway:) (did we have some influence on his new purchase???...well, we like to think we helped out..LOL!) And when we drove by, it almost looked like the eyes follow you as you drive by it on the trailer. The paint job is SWWWEEET! We kept driving by it and checking it out feeling like we were being stalked:D I don't think the pictures do that paint job justice. It's one of the best paint jobs I've seen on a boat. |
I used ChromaLusion color shifting paint in the eyes so they change color as you go by. Also, both eyes are never the same color at the same time. It was a really successful effect.
|
hey glassdave what brand paint do you use on the boats that you paint. im also curious do you put your basecoats right on top of the gel or do you put some type of sealer or adhesion promoter down first.
|
im also curious do most of the boat painters take a boat apart to do graphics such as rub rails, bow rails , cleats etc. or do you tape around.? what about clearing the graphics? do you clear the intire boat from the chine up or do you just try to cover the graphics?
|
I'd like to know also. I have experience doing some custom work on motorcycles and cars a few years ago using laquers etc. So far I haven't had the courage to take on my boat.
|
LATER .........In response to your question above.
In my studio, very little disassembly takes place. I mostly paint for the manufacturers and we have decided that it is best to tape off the pieces that will never move, to tape around the parts that could move even a little. For instance, I leave a 1/4" tape line around the windshields and rubrails. If you were to tape directly up to them, the movement from either flexation or bumping will chip the paint that butts up to it. This will usually cause chipping or flaking and will always look bad after it has happened. By leaving the 1/4" line, it remains clean and crisp for good and never will look ragged. Other pieces that have a silicon bead around them are taped off with either 1/8" or 1/4" tape for the same reason because the paint won't stick to the silicon in the caulk. |
We clearcoat only what needs to be cleared. Sometimes the graphic needs to be fully cleared to the chine because of the fades, etc. that are in the design.
With the introduction of the polyurethane base/clear systems, the lacquer days are pretty much gone. I use lacquers only when necessary for muraling and special effects. |
Only Painter I know
It would be a bit of a drive but well worth it. Dean Loucks in Niles Michigan does awsome work. He has a website at http://www.taod.org He has an on-line portfolio. Check out his work and you decide if he's what you are looking for.
|
What kind of clear are you guys using? Do you ever run into problems with the clear below the water line? I did some outdrives for someone once and they got milky looking after they sat in the water for awhile. Since then I have just used single stage Imron. I use DuPont bc/cc on muscle car restorations. Beautiful paint work guys. I KNOW what it takes make a peice of art like that.:)

Boat Graphics
Hi Rick252,
I co-own Raceline Digital. Thought I'd check out this site. Heard great things about it. I'd be happy to help you out with some graphics! Check out our website and let me know what you are looking for. Annette |
Annette , I have added your Link to my site. Because this has been such an inquiring topic, I built a page for Paint & Graphics LINKs. It is located under my "Parts and Accessories" page @ www.SHARKEYMARINE.com
If anyone has other Graphics sites that I can use, please post them. Thanks!;) |
racelinedigital
I've seen you web site and love the work. I'm really leaning to going the vinyl route so it can be changed whenever I get tired of it.
Annette: I just sent a picture with e-mail, you have my palms all sweaty now waiting to see the results |
I had no idea Mitcher T was a board member either.
Mitcher T, I saw some of your work at Sunsation as well......Impressive to say the least!! |
Playn
I was really sorry to have missed the rally, I missed everyone and those I was hoping to meet. Next year for sure.
|
I have a Mitcher T paint job on my boat and all I can say is that it is excellent with no imperfections!!!
|
I sent Mitcher T pictures, and now I'm just waiting to see what he comes up with. I'll let everyone know how it turns out

In my boat I want solid midnight blue from the rub rail to the chine,(like playboy cig) should this be done with paint or in the mold, what are the advantages/disadvantages of in gel solid graphics vs paint? new boat,
Thanks for inputs |
Rick 252,
I have a couple of ideas for you, the keylines are drawn in my computer, just haven't had the time to finish them. I should have them for you on Monday. |
Originally posted by hughandlinda In my boat I want solid midnight blue from the rub rail to the chine,(like playboy cig) should this be done with paint or in the mold, what are the advantages/disadvantages of in gel solid graphics vs paint? new boat, Thanks for inputs The disadvantage is that it is guaranteed to fade in several years, and then you're going to have the problem that started this thread and the "Boat Graphics" thread. You cannot get it to polish up for very long and it will not get the luster you had from the beginning, so you will eventually need to repaint. Either way, the possibility of a repaint after several years, whether due to gel fade or paint damage, is probably inevitable. The biggest advantage that I would say to painting from the beginning (and not just because I'm a painter) is that you have a much greater range of color and/or graphics possibilities, and you are limited only by your artist's capabilities (or lack thereof).
