Default 454 questions....

Boat I got yesterday (95 avanti) had a 454 in it. got it with no motor. In the bilge I found a seawater pump, alternator, exhaust manifolds and risers, distributor, power steering pump, coupler and other misc brackets and pieces parts.

There are different gens, heads and stuff, not sure if it was the original motor but sure it was a merc 330. All Im looking to do is get it runnable for the summer, no major power or anything fancy as its getting an outboard conversion this winter.

So does anyone know what long block/donor motor Im looking for or is all the 454 stuff basically interchangable?? Im thinking all I am needing is the longblock, intake manifold and carb.

Post some pics of the brackets and such so we can see what types they are and should be able to determine what blocks will work for you

Pretty much all 454's are interchangeable for the things you mentioned. Flywheels are a little different. Size is the same but the balance is different from gen to gen. Also if you get into the motors them selves like Mark 4 heads on a gen V require special head gaskets but all the bolt on's fit the same. The only concern is the Gen V 454 has no place for a fuel pump to mount (even though you can use a cam with a fuel pump lobe in the motor) and you will either need one of those super expensive raw water pumps with a fuel pump mount or you will have to use a electric pump.

The oil pans are different, (I have a GEN 4 and also a Gen 5/6 pans, I can let you have cheap). You can also buy a new block from GM that is Gen 6 on the bottom end but takes Gen 4, Gen 5, and Gen 6 heads (we have one on the raceboat) The front covers are different also (I have a GEN 4 and also a Gen 5/6 front covers I can let you have cheap). I also have several stes of nice valve covers.

If it froze you can pretty much bet the exhaust and coolers are junk as well.

Everything you have in the pictures is compatible across the generations. Like others have stated, oil pans, gaskets, seals, internal stuff and fuel pump provisions are the things you have to look for.
