Here is the revised text for what the owner reportedly did before he added a blower to the package:

"With its stock 260-hp small-block engine modified with Trick Flow heads, a new cam, an aluminum intake and Eddie Marine aluminum exhaust manifolds with stainless steel pipes, the boat reportedly ran 67 mph."

Sorry for the confusion. Again, I should have asked questions when the 67-mph number came up.

As for the project, I am not going to judge it. I am just going to report on it.

Back in the late 70s when my brother was building the 18 foot Barons that became the 185 PowerPlays /Powerquest we had Mercury Marine spend a day at the lake with us with a trailer full of props and a radar gun.

The reason we had them come is we usually had installed 260 alpha packages and we had recently installed a 280 TRS package that just seemed like a dog comparatively even though it was 20 more Horse.

We couldn't get a motor package in time to meet a last minute boatshow position that opened up so we bought a 280hp trs package off Tiara boats to meet the deadline and we had not any experience with them so we called Merc.

So any ways after a day at the lake and some prop changes the 260 alphas ran 58.5 and the TRS package was 55mph.

This was on a loose 2600 pound hull.I raced many Scarab 1s and we were neck and neck for miles as they had a pad on them .I was always within 2 mph faster than the 18 Donzis but they handled cross chop better and i would need to back out of it if we got into it.

The Villians were a 54 mph boat and were significantly slower than the scarab 1s though they were very similar.

So when ihear people saying their 260 Alpha does close to 70 spinning at the recommended 4600 i say Dreamer.

I think we need to start taking bets on how long the alpha actually lasts at full throttle. I can't believe he is going to put all that work into a motor and not at least choose a different outdrive. As soon as those gears snap that motor will shoot to an unheard of RPM unless he has a proper rev limiter. I am not even sure the rev limiter will help stop all problems.

A fool and his money soon part ways................. Has this guy ever heard of the internet? I doubt it.

You should educate this moron to come to his senses!! There is a '99 DCB26 with an 800hp Teague on the powerboat swap shop on FB for $45k he should just buy that or something like it.

The owner has informed me that he will, in fact use, an appropriate-for-the-power Bravo model.

The next update on this project will be written after the engine comes off the dyno. If all goes to schedule, that should be in two weeks.
