bottom cleaning...

Whats the best stuff for cleaning stained ugly bottoms??

mallatt442 04-28-2013 01:40 PM

There are several hull cleaners out there, I like the stuff from West Marine.

You can easily get it at Home Depot $9 gallon. Literally spray it on with a bug sprayer and come back 5 minutes later and hit it with a hose.

Perfectly white and 10x cheaper than any marine product....

Perlmudder 04-28-2013 02:02 PM

on off acid works great, but sucks to work with it. Muriatic acid will do it also. Neither are very good for your boat.

Interceptor 04-28-2013 02:09 PM

Used muratic and or on/off for 25plus years and never had a problem.

ON OFF is the best in my book

99% sure the Goof Off product is the same chemicals as On/Off. It smells exactly the same.

I was at my marina one evening and 6 boats were being detailed all of them were using this stuff. I picked some up, sprayed my hull and was very happy. My stainless Lathem steering hardware looks brand new!

cmkworm 04-29-2013 06:33 AM

I used toliet bowl cleaner (muriatic acid) last fall in a sprayer. Be careful with your driveway as it will stain the concrete. I also was careful with the drive and trailer and kept it wet/washed off of those.

Crude Intentions 04-29-2013 07:13 AM

Another product called Mary/Kate hull cleaner. Works great. As soon as it touches water it's dead. I wipe whole hull and the hose dry.

Madman7 04-29-2013 08:12 AM

On/Off if the boat is really hit..

For general upkeep, you can't beat Slimy Grimy.

lucky strike 04-29-2013 08:19 AM

Norlo toilet bowl cleaner , Mary k, it's all the same stuff basically

Use rubber gloves & a paint brush after you spray it on

Why do you think they are not good for you boat? They come in a PLASTIC bottle :D Your boat is basically made of plastic.

wstultz 04-29-2013 09:09 AM

Are any of these cleaners bad for Aluminum? I only ask because mine sits on an aluminum Myco and I would be sad if they some how tarnished the trailer.

Definitely will stain/etch aluminum. Cover the trailer beams with plastic, or wet the trailer first.

mittens 04-29-2013 09:18 AM

it all depends on what you trying to get off? the carpet moss?

or the brown stain ? what.

the brown stain can be WIPPED off with iron out, and water. (int he pluming section of walmart.)

Another vote for Power One... I used it on mine last year with great results. Works just as good as acid, but with the chemical burns! :evilb: :eekdrop:

low_psi 04-29-2013 10:06 AM

POWER ONE! Enuff said.

Haha. Have you ever tried putting it in a cheap spray bottle like windex? not a good outcome. The stuff works great, no work required, but then you have to wax everything all over again. I was once day working on a 130 at Bahia Mar in Lauderdale and they wanted me to clean the tiny enclosed lazarette with it. I said, sorry man, I don't get paid enough for that.

+1...If it is a serious stain, buff out with diamond cut and then apply Leverage wax. I get compliments all the time for my '97 Baja.

Which cleaner did you use? The link goes to the main Goof Off page. The outdoor rust remover maybe?

Thx

Same product ?

Rick G 08-22-2013 05:16 AM

By far the best hull cleaner I have used is called Captain Phab.
RG.

badluck 08-22-2013 05:33 AM

Oxalic acid works very well. Mix 1/10 with water and spray the mixture on the hull.

BoatnBrad 08-22-2013 06:43 AM

I can't speak for everyone on here, but I have learned from my mistakes. I will never put any kind of acid based cleaner on any of my boats again. It removes the wax causing the stains to apear more frequent. Even if you wax the fiberglass after cleaning.
If a little research is done, or maybe talk to someone in the fiberglass boat building profession. They can confirm this. The mold for fiberglass is waxed then the gel coat is put in then the fiberglass. The mold it then removed from the whatever (in this case a boat hull) it is polished out and finished. The wax from the mold is still on the hull and acts like a protective barier. Over time when acid is used for cleaning it removes the wax and etches the gel coat. Even if you rewax the hull it will never be like it was when it came out the mold.
I am not a professional this is just what I have learned and my option is never to use acid base cleaners on my boats again.

Look close at bottle. Hill MFG. might have to buy a case ( but come back on here and sell it)
also Norfolk Marine in Norfolk VA will send bottles out.

No.

The stuff I posted is acid free. You can apply it with your hands and it has no fumes.

Here are so old OSO threads on Ringo.

JcookMI 08-22-2013 07:59 AM

Thanks for the great tips.

raptureman 08-22-2013 01:51 PM

The works" basic" from the dollar store is good and $1, 10% acid;;;;;;;;; The works regular is $2 and 20 % acid but fairly strong. Don't get either on your skin and keep running water handy just in case. Woks super great on stainless props to get the scale off.

vbot24 08-23-2013 12:50 PM

Hands down POWER ONE !! Spray on hose off!! No scrubbing Non toxic You cant beat it!!

J.B. Marshall 08-23-2013 01:35 PM

Marykate Crystal Lakes Hull & Bottom Cleaner, I put it in a 3 gal sprayer mixed with water and keep it ready to go in the back of my truck and after I pull the boat out I spray it on brush it in spray off and back to pure white hull again. Takes me about 15 min, doesn't get any easier than that.

BillR 07-21-2014 03:18 PM

My source for buying bottles of the best hull cleaner (Ring-Go) has dried up, and I used up the last of my bottle. So I was forced to find some and I did! But I have to buy it in case lots and that much would last me 50+ years!
So, if anyone wants the best hull cleaner that does NOT eat your gel coat, does not hurt your skin, does not require a respirator and cleans your hull - I have what you need.

The ever elusive Ring-Go!!!!!!

Search OSO, Speedwake, Boatfreaks etc and you will see testimonial after testimonial on how good this stuff is.

Directions: Apply generously with a damp rag, wait 3-5 minutes and spray it off!

It comes in a 32 oz. bottle that will last at least 4 full hull cleanings on a 38' boat. I've been using my bottle for 4+ years now on a 30' boat!

If you are interested the cost per bottle is $28 including S&H (lower 48 only)

Please PM me here with the following:
Your email address/contact info
You can pay me via Paypal
Be patient. I have a real job, and am offering you Ring-go because I needed some and want to help out my fellow boaters with the extra bottles I have.

Ive used On Off, Slimy Grimy Industrial Cleaner and there is another one Ive used, cant remember the name but still have some laying around. All three have worked well. On Off is the most toxic as you don't want to stand down wind. The Slimy Grimy is less harsh but works well. The other stuff works well too, just mix the powder with the catalyst in hot water and spray on. I will get the name next time I'm at the marina

On-Off is diluted muriatic acid. Go get the muriatic acid for 4 bucks a gallon and add some water if you want. On-Off is over 20 bucks a gallon.
